2017 season is overrated

I don’t mean it was overrated at the time. I mean it’s still overrated now.

We finished 17th in FPI that year. The 2005 team (which was viewed as a failure at the time) actually would have been 3.2 point favorites over the 2017 team, per their FPI ratings. (And the difference between 9-3 and 10-3 is because the 2017 team played an FCS team.)

Viewing the 2017 season as a success shows how low our standards are now. We think being the 17th best team is a good season, and that Manny’s 3 game winning streak is a big sign of hope.

That's right, start as many troll threads as quickly as you can, you know what's coming...

Do any of these things and it’s a successful season:

Win the coastal
Get double digit wins
NY6 appearance

In 2017 we did all three plus we beat FSU and routed Notre Dame. So yeah it was a great season for a bagless program like ours.

Good lord. The 2007 season would qualify as a success under your criteria because we beat FSU. (And you said only one of the 3 criteria have to be met.)

In addition, winning the Coastal does not necessarily make a season a success. Unless you’d count a season as a success if we went 7-5 (5-3), and then lost both the ACCCG and the bowl game to finish 7-7.

A Big 6 bowl is a better criteria. But we only got invited to a Big Six Bowl because of the ridiculous ACC-Orange Bowl deal. Same reason Wake is seemingly headed to the Orange Bowl this year.

I think a true criteria for success is at least one of the following 3

1. A playoff appearance

2. A Big Six Bowl win

3. A top 10 finish

“Our standards are low now”

What standards? We haven’t been crap in 20 years. 2017 was a bright spot in this bleak century. You’re dumb for trying to soil the best moment in 15 years

I’m basically arguing that a relative bright spot in recent years actually isn’t much of a bright spot at all.

2017 was super fun until the meltdown at the end, but lol @ “bagless”

Yeah a season where we was literally 1 win away in the acc championship from going to the college playoffs was such a terrible season, whatever man... foh with that bullsh*t. No matter how it ended that still was the most fun season we have had since our last championship title

With the Pitt loss, we might not have made the playoffs even with a win over Clemson.

Anyway, we lost to Clemson 38-3. With a result like that, who cares if we were one game away from anything? It’s not like we lost 28-24, and we could say we might have made the playoffs if one play went differently.

And I never said 2017 was a terrible season. I’m saying that it was a meh season that only seems good compared to the seasons that came before and after it.

If Miami beat Clemson in 2017, the #1 team in the country at the time while we were ranked #7 we assuredly would have been in the playoffs Pitt loss or not. Sure we folded the end of the year but it still was Miami’s most relevant season in a long time in which we stayed in the top 10 for majority of the year

This jerk0ff is an obvious Nole troll. He must still be crying about 27-10. Don't worry OP...next year's asswhooping will be worse regardless of your weak *** troll attempts.

2017 felt nice to the fan base, but was overrated. We got lucky (won 4 games by a td or less — fsu, gt, syr, nc), then got hit by pitt, embarrassed by clemson and lost bowl game.

A successful season at UM must be not less than the following: play for ACC title, finish top 10, win bowl, no more than 2 losses. Back when we were good, that would be mediocre and success would be playoffs+title game, period.
