2017 Orange Bowl Announcers

I found it strange that they stuck McShay on the sidelines, just give him a job as an announcer with the other two. Having him on the sidelines seemed strange when he's really a draft guru guy.

Mike Mayock was inept on the Notre Dame telecasts. That's probably why they are reluctant to stick a personnel guy full time in the booth. Mayock was completely oblivious to the emotion and flow of the game while fixated on some trivial blocking technique that had nothing to do what unfolded during the play.

You know it's bad when NBC switches Mayock to the sideline in the middle of the season, reversing roles with Doug Flutie, who is hardly awesome himself. But it was absolutely the correct decision. The energy and caliber of announcing picked up immediately.

I don't think McShay would make the same mistake. He is not nearly as robotic and one-dimensional as Mayock, plus he has lots of studio experience.

McShay is an excellent young talent and is very well respected on the specialized draft forums. They cite his opinions and lists all the time and say he is the most underrated guy out there. When McShay differs sharply on a player his track record typically has been very good. I've seen that breakdown multiple times on those draft boards. Some posters who held the old view of McShay were forced to come around on him. Naturally on the SAM infested sites the conventional wisdom is brutally the other way around.

Overall this is a very good crew. Griese and Levy have a good wisecracking rapport.

Solid crew.

hUh! That's a FIFTH team crew. Nothing more, nothing less. Heck, give me Brock Huard or McElroy, and their partners. At least those dudes PLAYED the game, and are relatively OBJECTIVE and all that. I'll even take Palmer over Griese, Jr. dUh.
