1991 Cotton Bowl

Stan Thomas ran his mouth.

And Erickson didn't give the refs a paragraph, he told them to go **** themselves.
I guess you know more than the back up QB who was standing next to Coach E. Here’s something else you don’t know, Randal told Craig on the sideline “throw me a long one going towards the tunnel, you won’t believe what I do.” The gate was locked at the end of the tunnel or he was going to take a lap around the outside of the cotton Bowl! Stay in your lane, I have a a few witnesses, Craig, Thrill and the guy who took the last snap of the game for starters! If you need more let me know

That game should be renamed the Russell Maryland bowl. He was totally unblockable that game.
Big Russ had 5 sacks if I remember correctly. Great guy, gentle giant in our top 5 DTs ever. Jimmy took him first when Rocket bolted to Canada.

One of the greatest football games I ever saw. Its on my Mt. Rushmore along with:
1989 beat down of #1 ND (revenge for ‘88)
2000 defeat of FSU on wide right 3 (we knew we were back that day)
2001 NC beat down of Nebraska
all other NC games
All on my top 10 list along with the night Klingler and the Houston Cougarscame to the OB and fellas felt disrespected. We’d all know what happened. Coach E called off the dogs, the boys wanted to run it up.

Ah, the game that caused the "Miami Rule" to be created. It is the only time I ever remember two personal fouls being assessed against one team on the same play, which was our first punt return after Texas went 3 and out on the opening possession. And the punt went out of bounds so there wasn't even an actual return.

It was 1st and 40 and we converted. Good times!

Correct.

and Correct!

FFS I had far too much to drink that day...

Time for Miami to work out its anger for getting left out of ACC championship on UNC like we did to Texas in 1991. Anyone remember that game?
Was a young 8 year old there with my family. Wound up staying at the team hotel, met all the players, and then exposed the film before winding. I remember it being cold as **** and snow on the ground when we arrived. I also remember being very, very confused why all of their fans left by halftime.

That's probably my favorite single game. I rewatched it recently and was surprised by how anemic our rushing game was to start.

It was a joy to watch an angry Miami disembowel an opponent. Something serendipitous about Miami's final regular season game being a matchup with the longtime Texas coach, who also happened to have been the guy who fired Diaz.

Revenge game for Diaz against Brown, against the ACC for robbing Miami of a chance at the acc championship, and we still owe UNC some more punishment for this.

Great game. Thursday night. 40-7.
Klingler and their offense were exposed

That game is the reason I'm a Canes fan. Kid from Texas ran his mouth in the paper and that team curb stomped them. Francesca crying at half time was beautiful.
The OL was Stan Thomas who was talking smack that he was gonna “make sure they remember when they come to Texas”.

There also was a DB who I can’t remember his name but he went by “The Sheriff” who was going “to arrest those hoodlums from Miami”.

I remember being 12 and reading the Greg Cote article in the Miami herald with these quotes. He was openly mocking the two Texans for not knowing who they were fúcking with. Rest is history

Jenkins, the Houston HC had made some comments the week of the game that got the fellas attention. He said “hide the women and children, the Cougars are coming to town.” My relative was not one to talk much but he told us Wednesday night that UM was going to ambush them. There was a certain “feel” about games that got their attention and Houston had that feel.

Thank you.

That was one of the best childhood memories from start to finish - the build up, the actual game, and the aftermath. Seeing the Billy Corben doc cover the Cotton Bowl instantly had me reliving plays I vividly remembered watching as a kid with new tidbits commentary thrown in.

great times

We were sitting behind the Miami bench at the Cotton Bowl.

True story...,during the 4th quarter Lamar Thomas sees my buddy talking on his cell phone. He literally climbs into the stands and asks my buddy to use his cell phone to call a girl he wanted to hook up with after the game. We were laughing our asses off.

One of the worst beat downs I’ve ever witnessed a team take. #2 Texas was running their mouths the whole week before the game. Robert Bailey set the tone and they never let up.

91&92 FSU just the intensity and knowing the winner would probably have a chance to win a NC. Brutal hard fought games and both teams had the utmost respect for each other. Great college football games

DO I??!! Lol.

I know we have some fantastic moments, but I will forever be endeared to that 91 Cotton Bowl.

Came out flat against BYU in our opener; lose a rough one to our arch nemesis to ND a couple weeks later...just to blow the roof off everyone to end the season. Could’ve hung 60+ against UT had we stopped being so disrespectful! Lol.

I Remember

Baileys kickoff.

Stan Thomas talking trash about Maryland before the game and then getting worked.

Randal Hills in the tunnel.

Darrin Smith sick pick 6 from the OLB spot.

****load of unsportsmanlike but didn’t impact the game.

Good times.

My Dad recorded that game on VHS when it happened so if I had a working VHS player still I could watch it rn.
