1988 Week 1 vs Florida State

I liked the 2pt call. Play for the win and thats jimmys personality and that was the teams DNA.

interestingly enough, if we tie the game I wonder if we get a rematch with ND in the title game, given the hate that was/is had for Miami

well, remember UM was #1 coming into that game. I think the rematch would've been as hyped as any game in college football history at that point

I'm just not crazy about the play call for the 2 point conversion. ND during that time had a great short yardage defense. I don't know what could've been called. A tie would've been fine with me. Remember they played for the tie against Michigan State years before. The '88 ND game should've been an easy one. They had better teams in my opinion in '89 and '90.

Leonard Conley was incredible for such a small back. I made a banner for the game that said "Turn the Seminole Rap into the FSU Blues". The Hurricane club wanted to borrow it so I said me and my friends have to be included in whatever video you do. It was the lead in for the JJ show that week.

LOL, Fraggle I have a bunc of Jimmy Johnson Shows on VHS, this post is tempting me to look for that particular show

What I most remember about Conley was his late fumble vs Notre Dame in 90 that ended any chance of a UM comeback. ND had just scored a td on a well conceived 3rd down screen pass to go up 29-20. UM quickly drove back down the field but Conley fumbled deep inside nd territory after a nice catch n run.

ND had a talented offense. The Miami defense forced them into a handful of fgs..iirc, nd only scored 1 td on offense. The other td came on Rocket Ismail ko return.

Miami gave up 2 ko returns for tds that yr.. the other one was to Cal Russell White the nephew of USC Heisman trophy winner - Charles

When Miami played fsu in 88 few national pundits expected a Miami win. I think Miami started the season ranked in the back half of top 10. Few expected Miami to replace all the great players loss from the 87 NC team. They were wrong

I watched Leonard play in HS (Tarpon Springs)...

Was never a big fan of his game, because Conley had a big fumbling problem. And didn’t think he fit Ericksons 1 back offense, in particular, because he was too small.

Sven, quick question, did you agree with the decision to go for 2 at the end. I always thought that getting out of their with tie was like a win based on the circumstances. But hey, Jimmy plays to win. I can respect that.

I never had a problem with JJ going for 2.

I am still ENRAGED, to this day, by the refs ******** up the Cleveland Gary call. To my dying day, I will continue to ACCURATELY point out that the split-squad of refs DID NOT DID NOT DID NOT call a fumble, they said that Cleveland Gary was DOWN and that he had FAILED to make a first down, even though it was 4th and 7 from the 11 yard line and Gary made it to the 1.

You can see Jimmy Johnson CLEARLY making the "first down" arm gesture, NOT the "ball is down" arm gesture. The refs even admitted their mistake and there is a contemporaneous Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel article that describes what happened. After the season, the NCAA outlawed "split-squad" referee teams because of the notoriously poor communication that such groups usually had during games.

The ball was spotted where Cleveland Gary's arm was down (inside the 1), and NOT where Stonebreaker recovered the "fumble" (near the 3 yard line).

ABC went straight to commercial and did not show multiple replays or discuss the play afterwards.

No fumble. No matter what Holtz said in his LIES about that game. Refs screwed us.

That final touchdown should have been the GAME-WINNER, even without a 1 or 2 point conversion.

That crap still ****es me off, what could have been. The Canes truly should have won NCs in '86, '87 and '88
