1986 v. 2002

That 86 team no doubt. The 2000 team ended up with the same record as Washington and they beat us yet we ended up ranked ahead of them, but late in the year we would have curb stomped there butts.

My stepfather to this day thinks that Vinny was paid off for the Fiesta game.

If anyone has watched Vinny, he also blew the bowl game vs. Tennessee, and in the playoffs when he was with the Jets, he either blew it or horribly injured.

Vinny was a great regular season QB, not a good post season QB.

2000. Didn't win it not because of a BS call on the field, but because of retarded computers.

How does a computer pick FSU over us though we beat FSU? Whatever.

How did computers rank Miami over a Washington team that beat them?? Both had 1 loss

2000 team was our most loaded team ever IMO.

I was only 7 in 1986 so a majority of what I know about that team is from reading old articles and watching old highlights. I do know the names and remember a lot of those guys having long NFL careers. I remember my dad and uncle being particularly ****ed about that Fiesta Bowl.

The 92 team was loaded too but were too one dimensional on offense. Stephen McGuire had graduated and Donnell Bennett and Larry Jones led a particularly average stable of running backs who just couldn't do anything against the better defenses they played. I remember that 8-7 game against Arizona in the Orange Bowl where they just had nothing for the Wildcats defense. Bama exposed them in the Sugar Bowl.

The 2000 team's overall talent is almost unfathomable. Imagine the 2001 Hurricanes (best team in history) and add Reggie Wayne, Santana Moss, Dan Morgan and Al Blades. I know there's others. It's truly a travesty that they lost that one game to Washington. Had the CFP existed in 2000, I'm 100% positive Miami wins it all.

Throw in '88, Notre Dame, Cleveland Gary non fumble. Then '92, Alabama *****ed slapped our Canes, but ****! That was a good team, and only game to this day I ever bet on. Lost $50, but them days, I was only making minimum wage. Guess it was for the best, haven't gambled since. Anyway, Canes were nice favorite that nite, and **** the bed. There was a Sugar Bowl Canes lost to underdog Tennessee one year that would have been a title too. **** we could be sitting on 7 or 8 easy! '86 Fiesta Bowl still stings the most. The Notre Dame '88 game and 2000 computer glitch are close though

Beat me to it. I was going to say '88. Could have easily won 3 in a row twice. 86-88 and 00-02.

'86 team may have been my all time favorite team, that was the true height of the Canes bad boy image, kick your *** and talk **** the whole game. It was a beautiful thing to behold, still not over that Fiesta Bowl loss, **** you Vinnie

We won in 89, so it would have been 4 in a row, 86-89.

**** me, lack of sleep doing me in again. And I was at the Sugar Bowl win over Bama too.

Dang. Not only do we have the greatest teams to ever play, we also have the greatest teams to ever lose. The thing is that all but one of those NCs were stolen in one way or another. Joe Pa stole Johny Majors' game film from the Sugar Bowl the year before(it was his defense plan that beat us for years), refs stole 88 and 02, and computer stole 2000. Maybe Bourbon Street stole 92, but I got to give that one to Bama.

The fact that we could lose that many NC's and STILL have 5 rings is amazing. THE U gave fans my age 100 years of football greatness in one lifetime. Frigging unbelievable. Only ND, Bama, USC and OU can even be mentioned with us and only over much longer time periods. If we can only come back and end Bama's recent run .......

That's b/c your step father saw Vinny throw direct passes to PSU defenders w/ no Canes in sight (no pun intended)

If we had beaten OU I'm sure Butch stays. We win at least 2 straight titles and probably 3 from 2000-02. We never get Coker or the even worse Shannon or Golden. The mediocrity from 2006-15 never happens. Butch never gets stained from his NCAA violations at UNC. Butch would probably be heading into his last 1-3 years now of a more than 20 year tenure, possibly with a head coach in waiting. We'd be hoping he could do as well as Butch.

How do you figure? Dude wanted his shot at the NFL, no amount of college winning was going to change that. If anything, he might have left a year earlier.

Didn't make matters any better than I just re-watched "The U" again, and each time, those picks Vinny threw became more and more evident that those passes were on purpose. It'll be different if a ball was tipped or a receiver ran the wrong way or was in the vicinity, but it wasn't even close!

Even though I didn't follow the Canes until a year later in 87, I couldn't imagine being a fan back in 86. It makes me sick to my stomach watching the replay of the game, even though i know the results! I still hope to see something different each time, only to get that same sick feeling. lol.

Everything about that pass screams "Throw it anywhere but where a Miami player can make a play." I make a better throw than that at the time, and I was 14. Throw it where your player has at least a CHANCE to make a play. He threw it directly to one of their players, who wasn't even directly covering anyone. Just sorta hanging out at the goal line. He under threw the ball on purpose. No other explanation.
That last pass.... How does ANY QB throw that? Kirby Freeman doesn't throw that pass.
Jimmy Johnson has said the 86 team was his best at Miami. The 02 team didn't have that great of a defense. I'll go with 86, they should have blown out Penn State in the NC game if not for Vinny being terrible.

Don't care what anyone says, Vinny was paid. The ints he threw weren't even close to being good defense on PSU part. Even w/ him playing that turrible, we still had a chance to win it at the end and Vinny threw the ball to an area w/ 0 Canes nearby. He was paid, and I'm sticking to that argument.

Yet he won every conceivable QB award that year, including the Heisman, yet he was throwing passes DIRECTLY to PSU players w/ 0 WR's around??? Vinny got paid.

He threw five interceptions that game, and had only four total before Fiesta.

I'm not saying he was, but how do you perform THAT bad without something fishy going on?

Uh...Butch left because Miami refused to reward him a contract extension that included a pay raise, in addition to wanting badly to be an NFL coach. That was Miami's best season in a while, I doubt if he won that Natty it would have made a difference with how stingy the boosters were being at that point.

00 team was the best to never win. 88 next followed closely by 86. 2000 team would have beat Oklahoma by 30.
