Between the 1986 Canes and the 2002 Canes, who would you say was the greatest Cane team to not win it all? Feel free to include other Canes teams that didn't complete the conquest as well.

2000 team was picking up major steam as the season progressed. Oklahoma was lucky to avoid the eye of that Hurricane.

Funny how sports work, and it's hard to think about these things for too long, but just the slightest (and I mean ever so slight) tweak here or there and we have 3 in a row 2000-2002. To only come away with one is criminal. As awesome as those years were, in retrospect they can be hard to swallow. Our dominance and greatness is not entirely reflected in the on-paper results, unfortunately.

Championships are so rare that to even have a chance, an honest shot, at 3 in any time span--let alone in as many years--is crazy. But crazier than that is having that shot and having it taken from you (in many ways) two times within three years. Wild convergence of circumstances required to be able to tell that story.

2000. Didn't win it not because of a BS call on the field, but because of retarded computers.

How does a computer pick FSU over us though we beat FSU? Whatever.

I think the ACC was considered better than the Big East during the regular season that year. After the regular season the ACC had a terrible bowl season while the Big East did
fantastic in bowls. But by then it was too late to change who was in the title game.

If i'm not mistaken, they were still doing co-champions during this time. I believe one of USC's titles was a split title back in 04. If that was the case, we definitely should've been at least considered as a co-champion due to that travesty.

Well OU was 13-0 and we finished 11-1. If FSU had beaten OU we should have been co champs. But OU won and finished undefeated.

If we had beaten OU I'm sure Butch stays. We win at least 2 straight titles and probably 3 from 2000-02. We never get Coker or the even worse Shannon or Golden. The mediocrity from 2006-15 never happens. Butch never gets stained from his NCAA violations at UNC. Butch would probably be heading into his last 1-3 years now of a more than 20 year tenure, possibly with a head coach in waiting. We'd be hoping he could do as well as Butch.

Jimmy Johnson has said the 86 team was his best at Miami. The 02 team didn't have that great of a defense. I'll go with 86, they should have blown out Penn State in the NC game if not for Vinny being terrible.

Throw in '88, Notre Dame, Cleveland Gary non fumble. Then '92, Alabama *****ed slapped our Canes, but ****! That was a good team, and only game to this day I ever bet on. Lost $50, but them days, I was only making minimum wage. Guess it was for the best, haven't gambled since. Anyway, Canes were nice favorite that nite, and **** the bed. There was a Sugar Bowl Canes lost to underdog Tennessee one year that would have been a title too. **** we could be sitting on 7 or 8 easy! '86 Fiesta Bowl still stings the most. The Notre Dame '88 game and 2000 computer glitch are close though

Which they wouldn't have had they played us. FSU killed themselves that game with what, 13 dropped passes? We wouldn't have shown up flat like that, period. No one wanted that title more than UM.

The 86 team should have never lost to those scrubs. The 2002 team WON that darn game. 2000 was a beast of a team by the end of the year, and OU lucked out getting to play an out of shape FSU team. I'd take the 2000 team over the 2002 team. Two years of Coker was starting to show cracks in the foundation.

I wasn't alive for the 1986 team but everybody connected with the program seems to think that team walked on water.

And the 2000 team to answer OP's question. After a rough stumble in Washington, they played pretty much flawless football for the rest of the year.

lol...totally lost sight of OU going undefeated that year. lol. Yeah, I guess they deserved it that year, then. lol.

Don't care what anyone says, Vinny was paid. The ints he threw weren't even close to being good defense on PSU part. Even w/ him playing that turrible, we still had a chance to win it at the end and Vinny threw the ball to an area w/ 0 Canes nearby. He was paid, and I'm sticking to that argument.

That last pass.... How does ANY QB throw that? Kirby Freeman doesn't throw that pass.

Yet he won every conceivable QB award that year, including the Heisman, yet he was throwing passes DIRECTLY to PSU players w/ 0 WR's around??? Vinny got paid.
