1983 Nebraska v Miami

Nebraska was a running team that was so loaded, they had a 1st round pick playing WR. I can’t believe I left out Irving Frier (however it is spelled).
Pretty sure fryer was drafted #1 overall too as a WR from Brasky

We got up big and had to hold on at the end. They scored on a 4th down (Timmy smith I think was the RB name) play late and went for 2 to close out the game. We tipped it and the rest is history

I remember sitting in the WEZ watching Nebraska warm up and they looked like refrigerators with uniforms, huge!
It didn’t look promising…

Good point. That’s another way that this title game matchup comparing Indiana to Nebraska doesn’t work.

Miami has the big boys in the trenches, not Indiana.

Kenny Calhoun. I woke the neighbors screaming when he knocked it down. A side note, he sat one row in front of my wife at the last game ever in the Orange Bowl.

All of the Canes championships have come against teams that wear red & white. 3 - Nebraska, 1 - Oklahoma, 1 - Alabama.

For those of us old enough to have watched this game, what we all remember is that Nebraska going into the game was called the Team of the Century, or some such thing. They were definitely considered unbeatable. They had a Heisman trophy winner in RB Mike Rozier, and a very good QB in Turner Gill. They had a very good coach in Tom Osborne. And the game was in Miami. I don’t know what the betting line was back then, but likely as much or even more than -7.5.

Does that sound similar to what we have in 2026?

All that to say sometimes you have to tune out all the outside noise and believe in what you have on your team. This UM team believes in itself as did the 1983 team. And if we play a clean game like that team did, 2026 will be the same result.
AI says the line in 1984 was 10-11 points for Nebraska v. Miami

The one difference is that Nebraska team was actually one of the best teams of the modern era. Indiana is really good, but they are not 1983 Nebraska, 1986 Miami, 1995 Nebraska, 2001 Miami, 2013 FSU (sorry they were really good) and 2019 LSU.

I moved from Hollywood in November of that year. Was pretty well settled in by game time. Didn’t know a soul except my now ex wife and her family. They didn’t know anything about football so I watched the game by myself on a 24” tube TV. I’ve never been so excited and spent my entire life. I’ll never forget it.

The most forgotten battle in this game was the one between Miamis Tony Fitzpatrick NT maybe 230 pounds versus Nebraska Dave Remington 310 centers rate the top center that ever played up to that game.

FITZ refused to be moved a slug fest physical battle that many whom witnessed it says FITZ won this battle kept Remington off our LB do the could feed on Rozier .

Not sure in many here remember that battle?

FITZ in that game WAS the greatest nose tackle in Cane history

I was there. I was a really little kid and don't remember the exact makeup of the crowd, but I swear the OB was significantly louder for Miami. I think some of these people predicting a red takeover of Hard Rock are going to be a bit mistaken.

yes - the size disparity in person was massive. Don’t recall seeing that type of difference since that game outside of a HS game. Total grit win.

Mostly ‘Cane but Nebraska travelled well. Not as good as Indiana will next Monday.

I get the whole underdog, no one expected Miami to be in this position, going up against the undefeated top ranked team, game is in Miami stuff.

But besides that, this is exactly NOTHING like that ‘83 matchup vs Nebraska.

The Canes have reached the mountain top FIVE times already. Indiana, on the other hand, has literally been one of the biggest losers of all time in FBS football. All time. They’ve only been good for a minute.

Nebraska was a perennial powerhouse program and that particular team was considered to be their best ever and maybe the best ever in the entire history of college football period.

The comparison isn’t working for me.
Yeah there are some backwards issues here historically.

An irony is that Irving F. would later play for the Fins and yet it was his drop of a very catchable TD ball that saved the day for UM.
Not really because they scored a few plays later. If Fryar had caught it they'd still have to go for 2 and if they had made it Bernie would have had plenty of time to drive and get us into FG range and we had a very good kicker.

Fitz was hurt and questionable to play that game. He completely dominated NU's center. It's fun rewatching that game and counting how many times Fitz just throws that dude out of the way and blows up the FB dive. I think he used to post here?
