#11 in total defense....what do I make of this?

Jimmys defense... And randys defense... All i remember was being on grassy while people blasted randys d year after year for not blitzing and being aggressive... This is 2014 ... Dominate defenses are a thing of the past very few are far between even the sec has adjusted ... Not many teams can stop that ga tech option especially this year with the kid from bama territory he runs it to perfection... As far as recruiting i love the way the class is shaping up just need to focus on defense we have the best player in the state in jj... Obviously loaded on offense love the oline recruits.... But then again its all how you see it i wasnt a big fan of the miami northwestern class we got under randy turned out all those kids well most were overhyped... Also the look at this guy and how he is doing the nfl thing i dont get.. Look at bama guys they stink a high % of them in the nfl...

Just listening to Golden on the joe rose show he hates to admit he changed the defense lol but whatever I'll take it

Why u think he's lying?

U think u can change to a different defense from what you have been implementing the past 4 seasons in just the past 2 weeks?

Think people think.

So you mean to tell me he's still calling 3 man rushes and playing safeties deep or still playing a soft zone c'mon man, you think?!?!he's dialing up way more blitzes and playing a lot more man with way more 4 man rushes safeties are playing closer too the line.... Are you watching the games?!?!? I don't care if he admits it or not; everyone sees it, I mean your the exception but it's all good we're still winning and that's all I care about!

Unc was supposed to do it to us. Now they may not be a great team, but their offense wasn't terrible. We put it on them, and now it's "they're terrible" three days before it was "unc is going to rack up 500+ and 40 points" .. at the very least, mope consistently.

Most of the '500+ yards and 40 points' posts are sarcasm at this point. Don't you notice they say that every game? While some believe we will lose a game they are being tongue-in-cheek about it. UNC is hot dog ****. I want Golden gone, but I expected us to steam-roll UNC.

Here is the disconnect; since some people don't get it.

The main problem people had with Golden was he was not winning enough games to demonstrate he could take us "there". This was evidenced by his track record in the ACC between 2011 - 2013. Now when people breakdown why we're not winning enough games, one of the main reasons was the defense. It wasn't the only reason but it was a big reason.

So to keep it simple, AGAIN, the problem people have is WE'RE NOT WINNING ENOUGH GAMES. When people explain why WE'RE NOT WINNING ENOUGH GAMES one of the main reasons was the defense.

Now it is 2014, things look to be improving on defense (which is good) BUT the MAIN PROBLEM SEEMS TO BE UNCHANGED. We're still not winning ENOUGH games. The reasons we're not winning enough games can change from year to year but if the main problem remains the same then it doesn't matter. So it is great that the defense is improving but the overall result (WINNING) seems to be unchanged. Fixing the D is not enough if the MAIN PROBLEM stays the same.

Before the season it was (for me):

1. Actual Improvement in the ACC (6-2, 7-1, 8-0),

2. Win the Coastal, and

3. Win 10 games before the bowl game.

Now (2) and (3), he has no control over and that is because we lost 3 games already and Duke is in the driver's seat. He technically can accomplish (1) with a win against FSU + winning out in the regular season. He technically could accomplish (3) but that would mean he has to beat FSU twice and he has never done it once. (2) is up to Duke as they control their own destiny.

So to review, improving the defense doesn't mean Golden is off the hook. Golden is off the hook when he ACTUALLY WINS MORE GAMES.

IF we went 11-1 with one of the worst defenses in the nation it means our offense is on par with Oregon or Baylor. Which, to me, would be an improvement over recent years.

We still rush 3 and we still play with safeties both deep and close and we still play cover 3 and play zone a majority of the time and we still blitz a lot and we play some press man. We've been running the same defense all year.

The defense has changed every year Al has been here. It doesn't change much in season though.

I'm not saying he still doesn't call it but your now seeing it less than before they have an aggressive approach now that they didn't have before imo..

All the recent performances have proved to me is that this team has the talent to be much better than it has been. The only corch on this team worth a **** is Coley. He's green and still leaves a lot to be desired, but you can see his improvement almost weekly. As Franchise said, this defense has yet to stop a decent team. And while we're not loaded, the performance on Sat showed that we have more than enough talent to do that.
Unc may be a bad team, but they are a good offense. They got stonewalled.

The reality is that there are very few good defenses any more in CFB.

This is far and away the clear answer here. We see the same thing in the pros now with all the rule changes. The game of football is leaned heavy to the offenses so the days of dominating Miami defenses that so many dinosaurs here LONG for just aint ever gonna happen again...to ANYONE.

Well, we should not have a problem limiting FSU's offense. I don't expect, as you say, a "Stonewalling." We should significantly limit FSU's offense.

Right? I mean, that is what a #11 defense does, right?

How do you figure that? We just got done saying how crappy the schedule has been the last few weeks. I know we want to all believe it but somehow I think that even with the more aggressive defenses we're seeing now, we could very likely lose to NEB and LOU. Those are both Top 25 teams ..period. Miami is NOT a top 25 team yet....not even playing at their best.

Losing is not the problem. Losing is the end result of whatever the problem is. If you lose because of the defense, you fix the problem (defense). It's the same with any other phase of the game. You don't FIX losing. You fix what causes you to lose.

That sounds Stupid. Other schools (alabama, VT (most years) and Mich State, etc.) can play dominate Defense, but Miami can't? Miami?

WTF........is the school moving to Iowa.

Slap yourself.

Don't tell them maroons this though.

The truth of the matter is, the defense has looked different these last three weeks...BECAUSE THE OFFENSES WE'VE PLAYED HAVE BEEN DIFFERENT!!!!!!!

- The Defense played well during the Louisville game regardless of what some here might say. Louisville is a conventional offense. Run from two back sets. Spread out and throw it. Duke, Carolina, and Cincinatti are all spread passing teams. All of those squads are drop back teams that are winging it left and right

- The defense DIDN'T play well against spread option teams. They did a decent job against Arky st...cuz well, Arky St. They sucked against Nebraska and Georgia Tech. Yes there are formation alignments that would you leave throwing things at the television and on 3rd and 17 against Georgia Tech, we had the base defense on the field for some freaking reason, but the majority of the issues in the Nebraska Game and to a far lesser extent Georgia Tech (this game is where the staff should take it on the chin), were on the players. Ends flying down the line. Safeties with no idea where to freaking go. Linebackers undisciplined. Our interior has been pretty solid all season long, but our play on the edges and at the 2nd and 3rd levels were shoddy up until Cincinatti.

So of course the defense freaking looks different when you aren't playing Georgia Tech. Their offense is unique and our defense only looks like that once a year. Not to mention that they are a really good option team this year as opposed to last year, when they had a questionable QB reading the mesh point and pitch. Equal blame should be shared all around for the Georgia Tech debacle. The defense had critical errors in coaching and from the players at the most inopportune times. The offense turned the ball over twice in a low possession game, which almost assuredly will lead to a loss. Special Teams gave up a fake punt. That was just a really, really bad night for all involved.

SINCE that point, the regulars on defense have been pretty much lights out and yes, you've seen some more pressures than you usually see, but they've been playing man in the back end for the majority of the season, and a lot of those pressures come on 2nd/3rd down and 6+. You're not bringing exotic pressures on 2nd and 2. Nobody does that. Not even Saban. We've been a bit fortunate in that we haven't played teams who can pound it at you and get to 2nd and 4 (Part of that credit should also go to our interior line who have done an outstanding job as of late against the run). Teams have either run it for a minimal gain on first down, thrown a pass that might as well be a run (swing/bubble screens), or an incomplete pass. That allows you to get aggressive, when you know they have to pass.

This is not a defensive makeover. They still engage at the POA. They still play zone with the linebackers. They still play a ton of 3 deep.

We blitzed Nebraska more than any other game this year. We dropped 8 a ton against Cincinnati. We dropped 8 against UNC. We're primarily a zone defense. Those things haven't changed.
