10th Coach Announcement 2/8/18

They must think he’s gonna be a sniper on the trail. (I know Coburn but he came in late to the game on that one.) That’s the only thing that makes sense. They think he’s gonna be the defensive Hartley. If not he’s a pathetic choice. #OfferTai

That’s the only explanation.

Ok I will say it..... Only 1 black coach on the entire defensive staff and he cant recruit. In a perfect world that wouldnt matter but like it or not its a problem.

keep going, I'm sure there is many

"Big time" 10th assistant coach is a strawman argument. Very few teams, if any, will be making earthshaking hires with their 10th assistant coach. But that doesn't mean there aren't teams making meaningful hires of experienced coaches that don't need training wheels.

Most rational people who are disappointed about the hire aren't disappointed because Patke isn't a "splash hire" or doesn't have a great coaching resume. People are disappointed because he has zero on-field coaching experience apart from being a graduate assistant and was an internal hire from our support staff with five weeks of recruiting experience to a defensive staff that could use some help in recruiting.

A fair question might be, how many teams hired a 10th assistant coach with actual, on-field coaching and recruiting experience at the collegiate level? Well, UGA did. LSU did. O$U did. Wake Forest did. Auburn did. UiF did. Pitt did. Alabaga did.

Even Kentucky hired the Colt's OLB coach to be their 10th coach (OLB coach). We hired Patke for the same job. Are other teams making similar internal promotions? Sure. USC, VT, and Clemson have all made comparable internal hires. Most schools will. But that doesn't make the hire any less disappointing and uninspiring under the circumstances. Hopefully Richt and Diaz are the smartest guys in the room on this one and Patke is the defensive incarnation of El Sicario Blanco.

I'm starting to like Diaz less and less.

If the Miami admin hadn't forced Kool on him, i'm convinced he would have hired some yes-man GA for that position as well.

The problem with Diaz is he thinks he's the smartest guy in the room. He doesn't want established assistants because they might question him. He only wants inexperienced yes-men to hang on his every word and do things his way, because Manny Diaz has all the answers.

It's basically the OPPOSITE of what Nick Saban would do.

didnt Lane say some **** bout Saban that goes along with you said about diaz lol

Saban hires ex-coaches like Lane. Diaz would NEVER do that. Diaz is going to promote some GA every single time, because that's the kind of person he is.

Good managers hire people who are smarter than them.

Diaz hires people with zero experience because Diaz is the smartest man in the room, and nobody else better tell him anything.

I just want an efficient staff, with us maximizing every bit of value we can squeeze from the 10 slots we're allowed to have. It's hard to know what happens behind closed doors, but it doesn't feel like we have a very efficient staff.

It certainly seems like with a few tweaks we could get significantly better. We sure need Patke to be an ace recruiter in the worst way possible.

I like this choice. It’s based on what he has done with Diaz all along, and this last recruiting season.

I don’t get it why you all are so negative obsessive over anything MR does.

Here’s an example of an NFL coach with humble beginnings (per Wikipedia). Not comparing talent, just path to success:

Coach Matt Patricia:

Rensselaer Polytechnic (1996)
Graduate assistant

Amherst (1999–2000)
Defensive line coach

Syracuse (2001–2003)
Offensive graduate assistant

New England Patriots (2004–2017)
- Offensive assistant (2004)
- Assistant offensive line coach (2005)
- Linebackers coach (2006–2010)
- Safeties coach (2011)
- Defensive coordinator (2012–2017)

Detroit Lions (2018–present)
Head coach

You naysayers are such know it alls before it happens.

You mean, the one that just got us the ACC Coastal championship and a top 10 recruiting class? SMH...

Why delete so much of your post? I thought it was excellent.

Not impressed with Richt the CEO. Just wasn't sold on his X and O's before but now he's scaring me

Tough to have an efficient staff when you have surfer douche Richt Jr. On staff doing the exact job his dad admits he already does.

The Rumph hire was terrible from day 1 (and it was predictable) but it's a distant second to Jonny boys hiring.

Got to see what he does this year with the talent at his disposal and a healthy group of offensive players. Offense last year was pretty good but tailed eventually with Malik’s inaccuracies as well as ahmmon richards not being 100% all year and missing Herndon the last 2 games

This thread smells like a just vacated elevator, with people having left a little signature in the air.
