with Dayton and Charlotte having players drafted before us. Rumph, Patke, Banda, Diaz have been with that group for all 4 of their years which should tell us something about their development skills. The record of 6-7 with bad losses to Duke, FIU and La Tech aren't as surprising when 100+ picks have passed with 0 players being selected. Tack that on to our highest pick the previous year in the 4th round (S. Redwine) and the prior year to our highest pick being a 3rd rounder (C. Thomas) and the writing is on the wall. If you still question it, ask yourself who on defense do we feel overly optimistic about that will be a 1st or 2nd day draft pick that we've seen this core staff develop?

Groot obvi. Could be top 3 pick.

Other, Phillips could go in the first with a good year, same with Jon Ford and J Miller. NFL Frames.

I don't think this is all on the coaches. A lot of these kids don't want to put in the work. You got all the transfers that come in and become leaders on the team cuz they outwork our current guys. Too many divas on this team that think they have arrived just because they made it to the "U". Now adays that don't mean jack. If folks would stop leaving early for the draft and perfect their craft, it would allow our young players who aren't ready to play to get stronger and not get thrown to the wolves to soon. We shouldn't have freshmen lineman coming in and starting on the O-line. That's a recipe for disaster.

It's less about development and more about us signing guys who have good talent but are small or light or not all that physically imposing. Take a guy like Bandy. A guy with his measurables is never going to be a high pick. Doesn't mean he can't be a good player, but he's tiny with short arms and not incredibly fast.

Jeff Thomas is 170 pounds, short, isn't all that fast, and has a gigantic list of off field knocks. Again, he can be productive at times, but he stood no chance of being drafted all that highly. Compare his profile to the guys who did get picked in the first or second. No comparison, and it has nothing to do with development. This whole development thing is always overplayed by fans.

This, analytics has taken an enormous leap in scouting and many players are either automatically crossed off the list or greatly devalued if they don't reach certain measurement thresholds

There are so many great prospects and so much data out there if you're a 5'8 CB with average speed and short arms your chance of being a high draft pick are nearly nonexistent.

Look at the D2 kid from Lenoir Rhyme who went high. He didn't go high because he got "developed" by his D2 coaches. His D2 coaches don't have some secret development sauce. He went high because he physically developed into a prototypical Safety. Same reason Greg Rousseau will be a top draft pick.

There's no such thing as selective development skills by position coaches. Stroud didn't "develop" Rousseau but couldn't "develop" Garvin.

Manny can’t evaluate or recruit freaky athletes and the ones we manage to land we keep on the bench for 5 games.

LMAO if you saw any of these players play higher then a 4th or 5th rounder.

We have to many small unproductive players.

Jeff Thomas has talent but he is unproductive.
Dallas is our best prospect and he has never rushed for more then 700 yards.
Shaq takes bad angles a lot.

To many players are bad at small detail things.

Not true. Optics is everything. Shaq goes to Bama, and I guarantee Saban and his staff hides any deficiencies Shaq may have, and plus he will be on a winning program. Shaq plays for Bama and bet money he goes no lower than 2nd round.

and which coaches didn't do their job vetting kids throughout their recruitment to see what was under the surface from their film?

Amik Robertson from LA Tech just got drafted in the 4th round and is Bandy's height.

AND he has hip issues. Maybe it's b/c LA Tech just smoked us and won 10+ games.
 
Yeah, this ain't all on the coaching and development. You can only do so much with marginal talent. Some guys may be late bloomers and you'll get lucky, but you can't bank on that consistently.

I'll actually give our development guys their due because each year we end up with average talent guys who somehow make it into the league and actually contribute. That's due to hard work and determination.

Gotta land the blue chip guys who have talent jumping off the screen. Straight up physical freaks. And the last physical freak we've had who was special was David Njoku. I think Rousseau can be our next special talent who has a chance at going 1st Round, but we've got to do better about getting guys with NFL potential.
