“Canes Warning” Twitter

I want to float an opinion on this subject.

I truly believe that, had the internet existed during Butch's time at UM, he would have gotten a lot more love from the fanbase. Back then we had no idea that Butch was building the roster he built. Had the internet been a mature thing back then (with all of the high school recruit ranking services, etc.) people would have seen the progress behind the scenes and been more patient with Butch. As well, the magnitude of the scholarship reductions would have been better understood by the fanbase.

I'm a long time lurker & short time poster, so all due respect, but this is an insane opinion. If the internet existed and was what it was now - with all the HS recruiting services, as you say - Butch wouldn't have had a f*cking prayer of recruiting the guys he was able to, in the way he was able to. Recruits have much more visibility into programs and would have had a better idea of what it actually meant to have such a scholarship deficiency, and big time national programs would have been much better primed to find "diamonds in the rough" like Ed Reed, Santana Moss, Frank Gore etc. With the negative recruiting + bags we would never have had a chance. Beyond that, name me one time since Schnellenberger that Miami fans have ever been forgiving or accepting of failure, no matter how reasonable the excuses. Exact same sh&t that happens now - inside "sources," disgruntled players, angry fans - would have been calling for his head at the first difficulty, just as they do now. Love what Butch did for the program, but let's not go overboard on the revisionism.

Thank you. It is 100% understandable and proper that you come out of hibernation to respond to that post. You tried to be gentlemanly. I don't own that requirement. That post you responded to is the biggest load of crap ever posted on this site. I'd like to believe it was parody. To think that it was actually posted by a moderator who actually believed the words is beyond scary.

Canes fans have no patience for anything besides an unbeaten national championship season. That was particularly true in the '90s after being spoiled annually for more than a decade. I attended Butch Davis' first game as head coach, the 31-8 drubbing at UCLA in early September 1995. Miami was 3 point favorite. Nearby Canes fans at that game were stunned. Butch Davis' benefit of a doubt was gone within 30 minutes. It was only 3-0 at halftime then totally non competitive in the second half. We couldn't stop Abdul-Jabbar at all.

I distinctly remember all the cursing at Davis during the second half. Then once I returned to Las Vegas it was nothing but the same from fellow Canes fans. I was shopping for NFL numbers the next morning. The Canes had a huge national following in that era. Lovers and haters. Many Canes fans came up to me that Sunday in frothing disbelief at how non competitive Miami had been. "Are we stuck with this guy?" That was the theme.

If the internet had been full blast in that era the savagery would have been unleashed long before the final whistle in that UCLA game, and basically not stopped for years. By 1997 Florida State it would have been far beyond anything we have seen in recent years.

I actually agree with him on the Butch thing. Everyone forgot how Butch started and wanted him fire. The original fly the banner was for Butch.
So you’re saying manny might turn into the next Butch Davis. Lol

I believe Manny will turn this around moving forward with very little support if any.

This is a hero to zero business

Like in construction business, I refuse any compliments or support of any kind and I Let it be known

The same people patting you on the back are always stabbing you fiercely on that same back .

Compliments will cause you to fail in cut throat business .

Well... there’s just no evidence to support that believe. Maybe if manny had shown better decision making skills, recruiting skills, or coach evaluation skills over the past year, I might be able to get onboard with that.

Your just going on blind faith. Which is fine.

Well When our QB Williams said he and many players went through the motions I was then pretty confident they did .

This is a bizarre take on the past. Whether you agree or not with SFBay’s premise that Butch would have benefitted from the modern environment, there’s really no point in telling us how awful he’d have been if the past were different. He did what he did in the real world, competing with the tools he and others had.

What everyone seems to miss understand about Butch was it wasn’t ‘recruiting’ so much as EVALUATIONS. The man was as good as anyone, ever (right there with JJ) at evals. The idea the world all would have identified those kids is false. The nfl all pro roster today is full of kids from far flung places. The camps identify a few traits more consistently than in years past. Those traits are not coextensive with the things Butch was screening for.

No chance.

The entitlement of this fan base those early years of the Davis era—9-3 back then to Miami fans was as bad, if not worst than 6-7 now.

That was a "national championship or bust" era—where the three guys before him all won national championships. People were also delusional at the time regarding the ramifications of probation and scholarship reductions—believing that the Canes could somehow stay above water, even with one arm tied behind the program's back.

Beyond that, had recruiting sites been around back then—Miami doesn't wind up landing a guy like an Ed Reed and a Santana Moss doesn't come in on a track scholarship, as they both would've had a lot of other offers. Reed was only a 2-Star because there wasn't enough film on him and he was somewhat unknown—hence Florida State not offering and Tulane being his other lone offer.

The fan base was beyond impatient back then—and even some recruiting success wouldn't have done anything to curb frustration with losing Big East games to the likes of Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Pittsburgh—teams Miami used to dominate—as well as that 0-10 run over five years against the Seminoles an Hokies.

Miami faithful are conditioned to losing now; 103-78 between the 2005 Peach and 2019 Independence. The nine years before Butch showed up, the Hurricanes were 97-11 with three national titles. Losing was rarely an option. People were losing their mind from 1995 through 1999 as everything about Hurricanes football felt like Bizzaro World—and Davis' gameday prowess and Howdy Doody ways were like a **** in a punch bowl, until after he beat the Noles in 2000 and the Canes were officially back.

So to that point, the recruiting rankings wouldn't have shown these not-as-highly-recruited, properly-evaluated kids and wouldn't have made a huge difference in Miami's overall recruiting rankings—which wouldn't have helped with a frustrated fan base, which was SF's original point; that the Internet and recruiting sites would've played in Davis' favor back then and taken some of the heat off.

Who is this guy?

Constantly defends Blake and Manny.

He’s also apparently unaware Highsmith was fired alongside Dorsey.

I've gotten into it with him a bunch. No idea who he is, but comes off like a Gen Z younger fan who missed the hey day of Hurricanes football and has a very limited overview of the history of this program.

Yet, for all his ineptitude, Davis never lost a bowl game at Miami.
