    2022 2022 Recruiting

Those striped warmups have helped IU recruiting going back to before Bobby Knight. Not saying true in Reneau's case but ... others have credited them over the years for choosing the Hoosiers. Globetrotter look.

Don't mean to denigrate Dewan in his time at UM. We'll never know what he might have turned into. He looked like he was ready to really blossom when all the crap hit the fan.

Thanks for the comparison. Very thorough, as always. Only comment is I don't think any HS player should get a 5 star rating based on "potential." To me, a 5 star gets that elite rating because they are deemed ready for significant contribution in Year One.

So ... is he a legit 5 star HS recruit, or in the mold of where Dewan Huell/Hernandez was coming out of HS?

Lotta Curbelo's TOs come from fumble-fingered bigs who don't handle his crisp passes well. I would not have one worry about his ball handling or passing. He's in the Top 5 in the entire country in those categories IMO. Shooting is not where it needs to be. I will say, though, he's quick enough...

    2022 2022 Recruiting

I've watched him a lot over the last two seasons. I love his ball handling and passing, and he's quick as ****. But ... I can see why Underwood is less than thrilled with him being unable to improve his shooting. Hard to be an effective guard without an outside shot these days. Think he shot...

Hasn't happened yet but I would not be surprised to see the Illinois PG Andre Curbelo hit the Portal. His outside shooting has become such a negative that Underwood benched him in the second half of their last game. Just a Coach's Decision, no other reason. We went after Curbelo hard as a HS...

Thanks, KofA. Somehow I think we'll have more than one spot to fill. Maybe a couple more.

Can't we have both? But, I'm with you on getting more front court presence.

Gables, think that is a good comp. Given the stiff competition he faced in Chicago, I wouldn't be surprised if he is more immediately impactful than Dewan was as a true frosh.

One of the consensus top 4 HS players in the state of Illinois. That bodes well. From The NBA Draft Room: "A.J. Casey is a skilled combo forward with big time upside. At 6-8 and probably still growing he’s got good size and excellent agility, to go along with awesome athleticism. Casey has...

From the scouting, Aire seems further along at this stage than Jekiri or Izundu. They, as you recall, developed nicely!

Aire might just be the shot-blocker/rim protector we so badly need. Raw on offense but even if those skills develop years out, he'd still be valuable from Day 1. I doubt any legit big man could expect more immediate PT elsewhere, what with our weakness inside.

Agree with everything in the post by King of A above (post #853), especially the "new priority" that coaches bring to recruiting, specifically "why take a chance on a high school kid that will take time to develop when they can get a more mature and proven player from another program." Could add...

I said above "Per another report, he has no allegiance to schools in the local DC area where he attends HS (after all, he's already a world traveler from Nigeria). Looking for academics and program fit." Don't want my words to be misconstrued. Even though Mr. Aire doesn't necessarily consider...

    2022 2022 Recruiting

Indiana University publication scouting report from a year ago on Aire: "At 6-foot-11 with a 7-foot-4 wingspan, Aire is extremely effective as a shot blocker and rebounder. The combination of that length and patience makes him your ideal rim protector. He averaged 3.4 blocks per game last...

IIRC, James Jones was about the same size out of HS as Watson. He later grew an inch or two, and added 25 pounds or so. I still consider Jones our best Florida recruiting get (over Stevie Edwards and Tim James). If Watson is half the player Jones became, we'll have a definite contributor.

As the kid said, he's taken an "unofficial" to Georgetown (which is 25 minutes from his home, meaning his family and friends can see all his home games). Looks like Marquette is clearly out but still think the Hoyas might yet have a puncher's chance. Fingers crossed.
