I remember Shaq's Freshman year West Virginia's Quarter Back ran him over like he was Earl Campbell

No need to misrepresent what I was saying. I said size is a talent not the only talent. You look at the SEC or even Ohio state backers they don't sacrifice size or speed we shouldnt have to either. To your point we took players like Wilder, and Huff because we missed on other guys. I also...

Agree to disagree. Imo size is a talent. I think everyone would agree our O line has been too small the past 3 or 4 years and size influences play. We have recruited the Wilder, Huff types and those guys literally haven't contributed. It's not just that our backers are small they aren't even...

This is the same point I'm trying make gogeta. People keep cherry picking 1 or 2 small linebackers we have had in the past to counter my point. Jon arrived as a safety the same way Allen Bailey arrived as a linebacker meaning neither were ever playing those positions.

You named one player. Look at the players who we are discussing. The notion that McCarthy, McIntosh, Beason or even Morgan were all traditional size for a linebacker. The Rohan Marley, Sean Spence, John Vilma is the exception not the rule. My whole point in starting this thread is we don't have...

So its our coaching. When you watch those highlights in the op those guys were always in the right spot at the right time. The coverage then as compared to now is night and day.

He played running back to. My point was he was projected as college linebacker

Love this break down. I think the key is to identify a height, weight, and speed you're comfortable with and recruit that no matter location or ranking. Tulsa, and Kentucky just put low 3 stars into the first round of the draft. The guys are out there, we just may have to leave the state.

I think this is true. None of our linebackers in the last 5 years have been in the mold of the guys listed in the op.

    Post 2001 Linebacker Tradition

That's the thing about it the guys I listed in the op didn't come in as 210 pound former safeties. Those 2000 linebackers were all blue chip guys that had height, weight, and speed. We're still waiting to get Huff on the field and he's been here 3 years

That's a play I can watch over and over. Don't know if Tebow was used to being body slammed like that.

I agree. He didn't really have upperclassmen to look up to which imo makes him that much better.

Yea I really wanted to see that. Wonder if he would have been a striker or backer. Honestly have any of Manny's teams ever produced linebackers like the ones above?

I agree with everything said here. Cook was number 3 right? While he wasn't on the guys listed above level, he was ok. I think when him and the Sharpton types comes in is when you start to see a little drop off in play at that position.

Randy had them boys playing at a high level. I was watching the 08 game against Florida and defense wasn't the problem.

We had some guys that could really play from 2002-08.McIntosh, and McCarthy were really underated. Physically all of these guys look much different than the players we are getting now. That groups level of play remained high into the 2000s.
