    Managing the salary cap

The difference between 2017 and 2018 is that QB play went from average to bad. It was never good. And the 2017 team was much better than what we saw in 2021. Forget about the record in one-score games. The 2017 team was good enough to blow away ranked teams like Notre Dame and Virginia Tech...

Probably more but you know what you’re getting. I don’t want to be holding the bag for Shea Patterson.

    Managing the salary cap

Getting back to the OP, I’m leaning more toward Portal QBs if you are spending seven figures. You know what you’re getting. @Liberty City El has discussed becoming a Portal QB school in the past. It makes sense if the high school QB market keeps going crazy. You need to be competitive with...

Jones was 15 TDs and 7 INTs for his career. Third string on that team. He was not the type of QB people are describing in this thread. That team was good on offense because they had Ezekiel Elliott, Michael Thomas, Devin Smith and Curtis Samuel and a strong OL. Coker was even worse. Does...

I could see that, it’s just early. Trying to be conservative in light of what we saw last year.

Good question. Probably not as talented. I don’t see 5 NFLers yet but it’s early for some of them. At least we’ve gotten competitive.

And 10 the year before with a G5 talent at QB. You don’t even have to go far back. We had great QB play in 2020 and 2021. The biggest difference was losing our stud DEs. Manny’s failure to recruit stud DL (and LB) got him fired. He had QBs.

    Managing the salary cap

But when you remove DL play, you can’t compete. Look at us this year with an elite QB and bad DL. We won 7 games. We had our best season in 15 years with a G5 talent at QB and a top DL.

    Managing the salary cap

LSU and Alabama both had first-round pass rushers and a ton of other blue-chippers. Those schools have been buying the top DL for the entirety of their runs. Alabama almost got the death penalty for trying to pay for Albert Means and LSU started their run by bagging up Marcus Spears.

By the way, for all this talk about the “playoff era” being different, here are some QBs who have held the trophy in the playoff era: Stetson Bennett, Jacob Coker, Cardale Jones. Luckily, they had the likes of Joey Bosa, Travon Walker, Jordan Davis, Daron Payne, Jonathan Allen and more.

    Managing the salary cap

What was the last team to win a national championship without a stud DL? Still haven’t gotten an answer to that question. We don’t have to go very far back for QB.

    Managing the salary cap

You’re a great poster and you always speak facts. The reality is you better have an elite QB and an elite DL if you want to beat these Alabama super teams. That’s what Clemson had when they beat them. But even in the playoff era, we’ve seen backup QBs at Ohio State and Georgia win it all. It’s...

And had our best season in 15 years the prior season with Rosier. The five NFL DL helped.

    Managing the salary cap

The truth is you need everything because teams like Alabama and Ohio State have everything now. But the separator is DL. That's a non-negotiable. The evidence is overwhelming and goes back decades. There is a reason Oklahoma looked like a pretender in the CFP. And it wasn't their QB, OL and WR.

They still won 10 games. We had TVD and the coach got fired.

    Managing the salary cap

Miami's QB was putting up Burrow numbers and is projected as a Top 10 pick. We still sucked. Clemson won 10 games with a horrible QB. Because of their defensive front. If they had their best DL (Breese), they would have been even better. You can't talk about Clemson's mini-dynasty without...

    Managing the salary cap

But that's not a fact, it's a guess. Georgia won. And not with an average QB. With a walk-on QB. In 2022. The fact is that no team since 2000 has won without studs on the DL. Many teams have won bad/average QBs. But always a good DL. Alabama has had an elite DL for the entirety of their...

Each of those teams also had a first round DL, if not multiple. And that's on top of other blue-chip, NFL talent in the DL rotation.

Georgia won this year with a walk-on. Alabama and LSU won a combined 7 titles between 2002-2015 with average QBs. Ohio State beat us with a terrible QB and a great DL. Ohio State won another title with their third-string QB. Now show me a single team that won a national title without stud DL.
