    Stop recruiting small towns

You said we’ve had “terrible coaches who were bad to mediocre evaluators.” Evaluation had nothing to do with Height’s decision to burn us. And we signed two other DEs, so they didn’t put all their eggs in that basket by “misreading” the kid. He just bailed to the SEC like most of those kids do...

    Stop recruiting small towns

This is irrelevant to the comparison, which is only amongst our NFL players. Those are the guys we got who were good. A miniscule number were from rural areas. I'm not even talking about outside of Florida. Who was the last rural kid we've gotten from Florida that performed? Teams like UF are...

And he went to Alabama, as expected. That's the point.

    Stop recruiting small towns

What did Romello Height tell us? I’m just looking at the results the last 20 years. The rise of the SEC has hurt us in rural Florida and other small towns.

    Stop recruiting small towns

This does nothing to explain why only two of our 51 NFL players since 2010 were country kids. It’s not about their talent. Country kids are great players. The good ones just don’t come to Miami anymore. We get guys like Zach Dykstra and Evan Shireffs. Romello Height is the most recent example...

Thanks for the input. Care to elaborate?

You don’t stop chasing 10s. But maybe you go to the clubs where you’ve had more success. There are only so many hours in a day.

This was the projection I had for Williams. He just had to keep working and getting better like Jackson did. I think Williams was homesick and got upset when Couch separated from him in fall camp.

The CB room is mismanaged. Williams is not a victim. Both are true. If Ivey got benched, Couch would go in. He finished well ahead of Williams.

That's part of the problem. We struggle to get them in the door. Romello Height is the most recent example.

This is why it’s important to look at the results over the course of a decade.

All I can say is that it was worse under our last two defensive staffs. There have been some head-scratchers (Elam, Samuel, Wilson) but they biggest issue IMO has been getting the fish in the boat.

    Stop recruiting small towns

It's just not realistic at the macro level. There are too many kids, there's no organized interview process like a combine, and the personnel departments are limited in what they are allowed to do. You get a better feel for the kids once you start recruiting them, but that's already a...

    Stop recruiting small towns

Of course, evaluations are always part of the equation. But the problem with small-town kids isn't their ability. It's our ability to sign them and retain them in the 21st century.

That's more of a Rumph topic, but you are right. South Florida has been weaker lately at CB so the misses hurt even more.

    Stop recruiting small towns

It’s not about talent. Small towns have tons of good players. It’s about who we can persuade to come to Miami. It seems we have trouble attracting and keeping good small town kids, which makes sense since we are one of the biggest and most unique metros in the nation.

Three of whom stayed in Alabama for college. It’s not a question of ability. Small towns are loaded with talent. They just haven’t been signing and/or performing at Miami for the past decade. It’s a culture issue.

I’m not that familiar with Georgia, but the metro there is over 100K. Not huge but not what I would call small town.

There are good players in places like NYC, Chicago and Detroit, too. I would especially focus on basketball-type kids who are new to football but have the body type.

@TheSwagger1 has talked about Dallas. That makes sense, as does Houston now that King is here. I wouldn't be scouring West Texas though.
