Miami Palmetto cornerback Corey Collier is only a rising sophomore in the 2021 class, but already sports an early offer from the Miami Hurricanes. Being a local product and growing up in the South Florida area, Collier has plenty of ties to the Canes and has a few good friends on the team.
“I’m close with Mark Pope, Gilbert Frierson, and DJ Ivey,” Collier says.
That’s not the only college program he has connections to, though. His father, Cornelius Collier, was a corner for Florida State Seminoles from 1999 to 2002 and the younger Collier is being pursued by Willie Taggart’s staff as a legacy recruit.
“Yeah, I grew up an FSU fan,” Collier said. “Both my mom and my dad went to FSU. So, big time FSU fans.”
So, it’s clear that this will be a yet another classic Hurricanes-Seminoles battle for a top-notch recruit. Collier says both rivals are coming after him hard and will likely be two of the main programs involved with him until the very end.
“They are both recruiting me strong,” Collier said on UM and FSU. “They would both be in my top 5 if I had one. They would both be in my top 5 at any time to be honest.”
The two schools are scheduled to meet in Miami during October for their annual grudge match and Collier plans on attending.
“I’m going to try and attend that game for sure.”
In terms of other schools that have shown interest in bringing Collier aboard, Power 5 programs such as Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi State and Boston College have also extended early offers to the 6’2” 170 pounder. When asked to who he compares his game most to, Collier sees himself as similar to one of the top DB’s in the NFL right now.
“I compare myself to like a bigger Tyrann Matthieu,” said Collier. “Aggressive and a ballhawk with good ball skills.”
With three years left of high school, Collier has plenty of time to come to a decision on his college destination and doesn’t plan on rushing anything. In the meantime, Collier plans to win some state titles with his Miami Palmetto team.
“To get to a State Championship,” Collier said on his team goal this season. “That’s like the biggest goal our coach always preaches to us, and about the hard work to be put in to get there. That’s the biggest goal for me and the team.”
As for his individual goals for the season, Collier stresses that he’s mainly focused on making his Miami Palmetto team great.
“Anything that can help my team win,” Collier said. “Whatever it takes to win, I’m a team player. Whether it’s a tackle, interception, a fumble or a fumble recovery. All of that, anything that helps my team win.”
