Miami wide receiver coach Ron Dugans expressed excitement with the Canes’ newcomers, but cautioned that Ahmmon Richards, Sam Bruce, and Dionte Mullins still have progress to make.
“I think Ahmmon Richards has shown some flashes – I think he’s stepped it up. We’ve just got to be consistent and keep him healthy,” Dugans said.
Richards was back in action today after missing some time with turf toe. His position coach assessed how he was moving.
“He was OK. He looked better – he looked a lot better. We’ll just see how things go with him,” Dugans said.
“Sam Bruce is coming along. We finally got Mullins back – got him here,” Dugans said. “That will take some time. He has a good skillset for us.”
Dugans was asked if Dionte Mullins, who was cleared to practice last week and had pads on today, was “too far behind” to make an impact this season.
“I don’t think so. He’s behind, but I think that’s possible,” Dugans said. “On this level, it will take some time. How long? It will depend on how well he picks it up when you put him in those game-like situations.”
Redshirt sophomore Dayall Harris, in his first season at Miami, has had an impressive last couple weeks of practice.
“I’m looking at him to do some big things,” Dugans said. “Dayall – he has good body control. He comes out at times and struggles to catch the ball, then sometimes he comes out and he catches everything. He has a good skillset and is a good route runner.”
It continues to appear that Braxton Berrios and Stacy Coley have separated themselves from the pack of receivers.
“Those guys have been playing like veterans,” Dugans said. “They do the little things that you ask players to do – detailed football players.”
Assuming that Berrios and Coley will be the numbers one-and-two receivers for the Hurricanes, Dugans was asked if a third receiver has stepped up in the “X” spot.
“It will be a game-time decision,” Dugans said. “Guys are competing and battling. One day it might be like ‘whoa, that’s the guy’, then the next day he may be ‘ok’, and then the next day he might be great. We're trying to put the best guys on the field.”
Dugans added that Dayall Harris, Malik Mayweather, Ahmmon Richards, and Malcolm Lewis are all in the running for the third receiver spot.
