I'm a little nervous at them trying JaQuan at LB since he goes 5'10"/190 lbs. Seems like Carter would be a more likely choice.

You're right. Put a less capable guy there because he's 15 pounds heavier.

Also the guy whose recognize and respond abilities are far inferior to JJ's.

Let's also ignore the fact that everyone has noted it's a situational move, not a full time move. It's like the only word association game we know goes like this --

"I say 'Savage', you say?"

"Jamal Carter needs to move to LB?"

"Ok. You need to reply in one word responses only. Let's try this one: Nickel."

"Are you trying to trick me? Why ask the same question twice in a row?"

I've been a fan of Jenkins since he got here, thought he was arguably our most disruptive DL on Saturday. We really need him to get healthy.

Its basically a 4-2-5.

Not to pick directly at you 252, but can we all just start calling it Nickel? I mean that is what every football team calls it, so maybe we can too? Kills me to see dudes constantly posting that. Its not a new defense, its nickel.

This.

425 is a unique defensive system with unique positions and terminology. We are a 43 with nickel packages (and presumably other packages). Do yourself a favor and start using the term "nickel" in this context.

How much does JJ weigh now? Is carter or DE going to get moved? We have plenty of people who could play safety we need Lbs now.

**Jamie Gordinier, out for the season with a torn ACL, was on crutches today and his knee in a brace. Coach Richt expressed his emotions on the injury.

“It was sad,” Richt said. “There’s so much work between January and now. It’s heartbreaking for those guys.”

What will Miami do in Gordinier’s absence? One major possibility is seeing a ton of safety JaQuan Johnson. At the start of practice today, Johnson was getting some position work with the linebackers.

Johnson has played defensive back his whole career dating back to high school, but has been most effective up near the box, where he can go and find the football.
“A nickel back is basically a SAM linebacker. That’s basically what he is. Will he play that in a two-receiver set? If he has to he will,” Richt said.

**Mark Richt said that FAU is “very tough up front” and credited the job that Charlie Partridge has done in Boca Raton. Another note on the Owls’ defense that Richt mentioned – FAU plays a lot of press coverage with their cornerbacks, freeing up the safeties to make plays in the run game.

**Richt said that FAU’s up-tempo offense is something that the Canes will need to prepare for this week in practice.

**Offensively for the Canes in practice today, the emphasis was on the run game and play-action passes, according to Richt.

**LSU transfer OT George Brown, Jr. was practicing with Miami as a left tackle today and wearing #70 .

**DE Trent Harris practiced today with his left fractured hand was heavily wrapped up. Chad Thomas and Demetrius Jackson were still the starters at defensive end though, as it appears they are trying to ease Harris back into it.

**Defensive tackle Gerald Willis makes his Hurricanes debut this week against FAU after serving a one-game suspension last week. Willis was arguably the most productive lineman during fall practice for the Canes.

**Miami defensive tackle Courtel Jenkins limped off the field late in Saturday’s game against FAMU. He started practice on the stationery bike today. He did not appear to be moving his right leg, but there is no update other than that.

You can technically also have a "nickel" with 3 DL and 3 LBs. In which case calling it a 4-2-5 just signifies it's a 4 lineman 2 LB, not wrong, or right IMO to call it one or the other.

Personally, I differentiate the 4-2-5 and the nickel package by which position the 5th DB plays. Nickel = CB, 4-2-5 = Safety That may be incorrect, but that's how i do it anyway. In which case i'd call it a 4-2-5 instead of a nickel.

How is that possible?

There are foot rests on each side so that you can pedal with one leg if the other is hurt.

Yup. Generally 4-2-5 defenses are played with an extra strong safety instead of an extra cornerback. The Miami coaches have been calling Jaquan the "nickel" so I guess the terminology is subjective.

Jaquan is a extra safety.
