State Of Florida Power Rankings - Week 5

State Of Florida Power Rankings - Week 5

Matthew_Suero
Week 4 saw two matchups between Florida teams, and those were the only two loses by Florida teams all week. This resulted in some shake ups in this weeks rankings, including a new number 1. So here they are, the week 5 Florida power rankings.

1. Miami Hurricanes (3-1, 0-0 ACC) (Last Week: 2)

Last week: vs FIU Golden Panthers (2-2) W 31-17

Next opponent: vs North Carolina Tar Heels (1-2)

The final score did not demonstrate it well, but Miami absolutely dominated this game. With about 10 minutes to go in 3rd quarter, Miami was out gaining FIU 339 to 10. Miami dominant defense mixed with an offense sparked by N’Kosi Perry was enough to move the Canes into the 1 spot on this list.

2.Central Florida Knights (3-0, 1-0 AAC) (Last Week: 1)

Last Week: vs FAU Owls (2-2) W 56-36

Next opponent: vs Pittsburgh Panthers (2-2)

UCF is coming off a pretty convincing win at home vs FAU and didn’t do anything that would cause them to drop in these rankings. Unfortunately for them, Miami’s dominant performance against FIU was enough to move Miami up. The Knights have a weak schedule overall, but they do have Pitt this week at home. A dominant win over a power 5 team would help them in these rankings.

3. South Florida Bulls (4-0, 1-0 AAC) (Last Week: 3)

Last week: vs East Carolina Pirates (1-2) W 20-13

Next opponent: at Massachusetts Minutemen (2-3)

South Florida did not look dominant against ECU by any means, but a 4th quarter touchdown was able to secure the victory and that’s what’s most important. USF plays UCF the final week of the regular season and that remains to be the best chance the Bulls have of moving up in the rankings.

4. Florida Gators (3-1, 1-1 SEC) (Last Week: 5)

Last Week: at Tennessee Volunteers (2-2) W 47-21

Next opponent: at #23 Mississippi State Bulldogs (3-1)

Florida went up to Tennessee and dominated the Vols to earn their first SEC win of the year. Tennessee played one of the sloppiest football games I had seen in a long time, but some of that credit goes to the Gators. Florida has a tough game this week as they travel to Mississippi State. This game will either propel the Gators up in these rankings, or drop them back down.

5. Florida Atlantic Owls (2-1, 0-0 CUSA) (Last Week: 4)

Last Week: at UCF Knights (3-0) L 56-36

Next Opponent: at Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders (1-2)

The Owls traveled up to Orlando to take on UCF last weekend and were able to stay competitive. In fact, they were leading with 1:34 left in the first half. However, FAU could not handle the Knights coming out of halftime. FAU has a weak schedule the rest of the year and will need to rely on teams above them losing if they are to move up in the rankings.

6. Florida International Panthers (2-2, 1-0 CUSA) (Last Week: 6)

Last Week: at #16 Miami Hurricanes (3-1) L 31-17

Next Opponent: vs Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions

Florida International got dominated by the Miami Hurricanes last weekend. The only reason that they did not fall in the rankings is because FSU continues to be extremely unimpressive. Like FAU, FIU has a very weak schedule the rest of the year and will have to rely on other people losing to move up past the 6 spot.

7. Florida State Seminoles (2-2, 0-2 ACC) (Last Week: 7)

Last Week: vs Northern Illinois Huskies (1-3) W 37-19

Next Opponent: at Louisville Cardinals (2-2)

FSU was able to get a win against NIU at home, but they remain at number 7 this week. If you play Northern Illinois at home and the game is still in doubt in the 4th quarter, you do not deserve to move up in the rankings. To make matters worse for the Noles, Virginia Tech not only lost to Old Dominion, but also gave up 49 points. FSU was only able to score 3 points against that defense.

FAU and FIU above FSU? C'mon man.

Yeah, he’s losing credibility each and every week pandering to the “we hate FSU/UF…” crowd. UCF did nothing to lose their lead. He should have waited until they played Pitt but he wants to forget that Miami played a horrid 4th quarter. And, then he ranks UF behind USF and UCF, even though UF beat a “P5” Tennessee and Miami beat G5 Toledo. And UF’s loss to Kentucky, like Miami’s loss to LSU, doesn’t look quite as bad now.
It’s also ridiculous to put FSU behind FIU and FAU. FSU’s bad but they are not as bad as those two teams.

Yeah, that ODU performance had to have FSU fans pulling their hair out. They absolutely rolled VT's D all game long, with a backup QB. A backup QB, of an 0-3 team.... I guess FSU is lucky they didn't play ODU.

I do not understand the logic behind a 14 point win over FIU vaulting a team that beat FAU by 20.

I mean, I get it...you want to put Miami ahead, but your own logic in previous weeks seems to be flawed here.

Also, as an aside...I know you want to put FSU in last because fvkk FSU, but they'd beat FIU.

I look at how teams play, not the final score.

I am going to have to disagree with you on this one. As you can see in the picture that I took below, Miami's dominance was not indicated in the final score. FIU didn't have any success against our 1st and 2nd units. With 13 minutes to go in the game, FIU had 0 points and 48 total yards.......48!!! It's hard to argue against Miami's dominance here. In the garbage time against our 3rd team, FIU was able to score due to a missed assignment by a true freshman and/or Knowles and was also scored due to a mis handled snap by our 3rd string QB.

Many on this board do not like to give our team credit for points scored or yards gained in garbage minutes when the game has be clearly put away. That same principle should be applicable for other teams when they do the same against our practice players!!!

Look at how they play for 3 quarters ... for 3 minutes ... or 3 days after the game is played?

The Miami game was 31-17 not 31-0, did you not watch the rest of the game?
Did you watch the UF game when they dismantled UT?
Or the FAU/UCF where the game was almost close?

Because if you’re looking at “how teams play, not the score”, then I just want to know what you’re looking at?

Actually Miami looked the best of the bunch, UF was given that game with 6 TO's and a repeat performance by UCF vs a team with a pulse and they lose. That defense is not good, 87th having played no one.

Our fans just love discrediting our team. You guys take these rankings pretty seriously huh?

I’m just scratching my head that Miami was 2 last week behind UCF and now Miami is number 1 when both teams won convincingly last week. What changed in the last week?

You honestly don’t think FSU would beat FIU and FAU? FIU is awful. FAU doesn’t have a defense but their offense could put up points.
What have you seen from FSU this year to say they could beat either of those teams?

Yes, watching the rest of the game showed that we had emptied the bench. At points our entire secondary consisted of true freshmen, while the LBs were all 2-3rd stringers.

It’s irresponsible to imply that Miami isn’t being given enough credit. It’s also wrong.

The issue that some of us have is that the criteria doesn’t seem consistent. At all. So showing how dominant Miami was like the rest of us have no idea still wouldn’t justify USF’s ranking or why this wasn’t done after Savannah State when Miami was even more dominant.
We will just have to agree to disagree on this one. All good!
