Staff Changes - 1/2 PM Update

**Earlier today, Manny Diaz referred to an additional hire coming on the defense. I'm told Miami is set on making that hire a defensive coordinator, which would move Jon Patke (outside linebackers) and Ephraim Banda (safeties) back to their prior roles on the staff. I can confirm the top target right now is Blake Baker, the current defensive coordinator at Louisiana Tech. Diaz worked with Baker at Texas and LA Tech and I'm told Baker was set to follow Diaz to Temple to be co-DC's with Fran Brown, with Baker in the playcalling role.

**As for recruiting coordinator, I can confirm through multiple sources that offensive quality control coach David Cooney is being promoted to the position. I'm told it is a done deal.

**As for strength and conditioning coach, I've heard two names floating around as options behind the scenes. One would be Kurt Hester, the current head of S&C at Louisiana Tech. The second is Bo Davis, currently the D-Line coach for the Detroit Lions and former assistant S&C coach at LSU.

I'm still stuck on that Taylor - Seider combo. If we could land those two I wouldn't give two ***** who else Manny put on staff.

Curious if Diaz dedicates a coach solely to special teams just for this season to fix the unmitigated disaster with that unit. Whoever gets that role will have a monumental task ahead of him. It was quite simply the worst special teams I have ever seen in 40 years of watching college football.

Never waste a coaching position for ST alone.

Since we are going low in terms of big time money on the defensive staff, does this mean we will go really high in terms of salary on the offensive staff? The budget should be there and we need recruiters

You need to open the wallet to get Seider and I’m sure they’ll open up their wallets to grab Fedora.

Got to make some big time hires on the offensive side of the ball. Defensive staff is fine in terms of on field production, just a little concerned about recruiting still on that side of the ball.

I like the idea of the Head Coach taking on the ST responsibilities if he can handle it. Bet Manny would crush it, if he was up for it.

I’ll feel better on that side if they get Bogle, Stevenson, and could build depth at the other spots.

Could happen. I noticed Kirby Smart is very much involved in ST.

Good, god...ST’s are usually coached by a coach who is responsible for multiple positions. This is an indictment on Harley. No one is saying ST isn’t important.

I would like Ed Reed as a defensive consultant or something. He would teach this staff and the players how to watch film like no other.

Agreed. Pete had a brief flirtation with adulthood when he was top dog around here. Now he seems to think that this 'heel' routine is endearing.
