Staff Changes - 1/2 AM Update

Barring contract delays, I’d expect to hear something announced by the end of the week at offensive coordinator. Coming out of the holidays, I’ve heard former UNC head coach Larry Fedora is indeed the leading candidate. I’m told there’s mutual interest here and Manny is working hard to make it happen. I also heard Fedora turned down the FSU OC job earlier this offseason, so he's truly looking for a place that's the right fit.

The other name I’ve heard thrown around is former Miami OC and current Georgia co-OC James Coley. At least one current staffer is pushing for Coley to get the job. I’m told Manny is absolutely out to make a splash with the hire and is thinking big. For this reason, if Miami can’t come to terms with Fedora, I’d expect other names to emerge first before Coley becomes a leading candidate.

Since Manny won’t settle for anyone too green, if Louisville QB coach Frank Ponce joins the staff, I’m told it would be in the same capacity, not as OC.

For RB coach, I can confirm Miami’s top target is Penn State RB coach Ja’Juan Seider, and there’s mutual interest coming from both sides. The biggest issue is going to be coming to an agreeable figure on the financial side. This is in the early stages so still a lot developing here.

Manny would do well to hire Fedora and stack Applewhite or Coley for depth in OC role. He can use the ***. HC title and co-coordinator title in there as well. I can't expect Fedora stays more than 3 seasons with any success and his big personality.

Applewhite and Fedora run two different systems.

They’re not going to be co-OC.

I don't think we should get pigeon-holed into this offense or that. We need a disposition change (which Fedora brings) and a modernization, which I think just about anyone can help with...

Zero chance Applewhite AND Coley are here. One or the other and Coley is much more likely IMO.

Major Applesauce was a complete bum as an OC for HTown & Tejas. Houston's offense was only explosive because of Kendall Briles & the Houston boosters/administration hired Kendrall because Art coached there from 03-07 & had the most success they had as a program since the late 80's, plus they still like the Briles family a great deal in Houston.

Coley is a BUM as a play caller, he doesn't nor did he ever call plays at UGA, he was just a recruiter & his recruiting is only enhanced by having Bags to support, take away the bags & Coley is average at best.

Fedora is the guy out of those 3 options, if for whatever reason we blank on Fedora, we should heavily consider Graham Harrell, Kevin Johns (who's still available), Glenn Thomas or Kalen Deboer.

I’d take a look at Josh Gattis who was the former penn state receiver coach and now bama co oc/receiver coach. He’s had his wide receivers at penn state and bama playing at an elite level and he’s one of the better recruiters in the country too.

No thanks on Harrell.

He runs Leach’s offense, which good defenses always stop.

I will take a great developer of Talent over a so-called good recruiter any day.

You need technicians at the coordinator positions, not recruiters. The recruiters should be the position coaches and the head guy.

Applewhite wasn’t a bum at Houston. In 2015 they had the 10th best scoring offense. In 2016 they were 26th and that year they had to play their third 3rd string QB in some games when the top 2 QBs were injured. The Applewhite slander is extreme. Kendal Briles didn’t get there until this past season.

I think you're disagreeing without understanding what I said to begin with.

Seider's a replacement for Hartley in terms of who he was as a recruiter. We can agree that Hartley was most certainly not the best coach on the staff - but his guys that he recruited loved him and came here in a big part because he recruited them well. **** - I saw Brevin Jordan (and his mom), Louis Hedley, and a bunch of other guys stumping on Twitter for Hartley to be retained.

So...the comparison between Seider and Hartley recruiting-wise is sound - but I said that Seider is actually better, in part because he's an upgrade as an actual coach on staff. Basically - what we're getting if we get Seider on staff is an upgrade over Hartley as both a recruiter AND a coach - which fits your "great developer of talent over a so-called good recruiter" criteria anyways. I never argued that criteria either - I think we all want the coaches to be both a great developer and a good recruiter. Hartley was the latter not the former, Seider is arguably both.

In 2015-16 there was a guy by the name of Tom Herman that might’ve had a little bit of input on the offensive side of the ball.

That was Tom Herman, you guys have convinced yourselves that Apple is a good coach because you're trying to lessen the blow if we miss on Fedora.

Ask anybody who's a Houston or Texas fan, they'll tell you firsthand that couldn't wait to get him the **** out of BOTH places, he SUCKS. If it wasn't for Mack Brown putting him on he'd be nothing more than a position coach at Rice or UTEP.

What did you expect those guys to say? Of course they're going to root for him to be retained. I bet there were plenty of players on the team that wanted richt to stay even though it was apparent that he needed to leave.
