Spring Preview: OL

No Miami OL played well last season.

Although St Louis improved over the previous season (which was the worst season of any Miami OL in the last decade), he was still very bad. He will have to improve a lot to be mediocre this year.

Donaldson started off strong, but tapered off badly as the season continued and the competition got stiffer. Do not be fooled by his All American recognition. There weren't very many true Freshman starter last year. I think he needs to lose a lot of weight-not just 10-15 lbs. Quickness and agility are going to be more important to his future success than mass. He did show flashes of brilliance, however, which is encouraging.

Gauthier had a bad season last year, but he wasn't terrible.

To me it looks like one of the true Freshman will have to start and its my guess that Hillery will win the starting position opposite St Louis.

I think once again the OL will be the weakest unit on the team.

George (FB) could really help at the point of attack. We really missed a good run blocking FB last year.

St Louis graded out really good for his pass pro last year. His biggest weakness is run blocking. Opinions will vary but he's not as bad as some think, and not as good as we expected. But overall, he's the best OT we have on this team.

Thank you for the constructive criticism.
Couple things that stuck out:
"two very replaceable linemen" It's fine to state your opinion but qualify it.

Trevor Darling with 40 career starts including starting all 13 games is easily replacable.. Ok but why? Was there a guy pushing him last season that we don't know about?

Same with KC Mcdermott (who made All-ACC, albeit 3rd team). Any time a team loses its starting LT its of concern. Especially as he started all 13 games there. Who was challenging him? Why shouldn't we be concerned?

This is then followed up by stating you aren't a fan of our only remaining Tackle with experience in St. Louis.

So now we're down our starting LT and you believe our starting RT isn't good enough to replace him? But they are both still "very replaceable"?

Darling wasn't good. What is there to analyze? Anyone who has eyes saw that. No need to go into depth analysis on that.

I agree on KC. Not easily replaceable if only for his senior leadership the entire season.

I agree with the kid on St Louis. Coming out of HS I thought he would be a stud by now. He has all the tools. Not sure what is the problem with him. With the tools and mean streak he has and not be an All-Acc performer is a problem. Lets hope the light turns on for him because we have no one else with experience to unseat him.

Scaife is better then Reed now but I also agree that Reed will be better in the long run IMO. He committed early so he was the forgotten man but this kid was born to be an OG. I think he and Scaife will be the best Guard duo in the country by their Sr years.

Exactly...

Grant, are you any relation to Todd?

Actually, I'll respond to my own post. I went to school with your dad and I'm friends with him on Facebook (so I think I managed to put it all together from your first post). I worked with him on UM activities such as Homecoming, IFC, Order of Omega, and President's 100. I also spent a bunch of Thursday nights at Promo Night, followed by Sid's Piano Bar.

Best of luck at Penn State!

Good job Grant. One piece of advice if you plan on sticking around. Never mention Penn State again. Many of the older guys still have PTSD from the National Championship Vinny Sr. choked away. Myself included.
