Reaction: CFP Rankings Bad News for ACC?

With the initial CFP rankings being released Tuesday night, Miami sits atop, but could this be bad news for the Hurricanes?

Miami is in the catbird seat currently, but could the committee be setting up something else? A one-bid ACC league, regardless of who wins the ACC?

Wake Forest is the only other ACC team ranked, currently at No. 17, well below where many think they should be, considering their only loss was to Miami and the domination of their opponents (outscoring them 187-31) in October. This ranking is perplexing and makes it seem like the CFP could be setting up to job the ACC with just one bid if given the chance.

If Miami wins Saturday and finishes the regular season 12-0, even a slip-up in Charlotte wouldn’t keep the Hurricanes out of the CFP. But what if Miami falls Saturday and goes into Charlotte at 11-1 to face Wake Forest?

There would be ten spots left, considering Notre Dame and the Group of Six occupy two. If the Big 12 receives one and an ACC champion not named Miami emerges, there would be eight spots remaining.

It’s almost guaranteed the SEC will get four spots and the Big Ten three spots. That would leave one spot for Miami, whose best win would be over Wake Forest, a team they ultimately lost to in the rematch. The Hurricanes would be going up against a fifth SEC team, more than likely 9-3, or a fourth Big Ten team that would also more than likely be 9-3, possibly 10-2.

I personally think the Canes need to take care of business Saturday, finish the regular season at 12-0, and let whatever happens in Charlotte happen. If we are 11-1 and fall in Charlotte, we are leaving it in the committee’s hands, and I don’t trust the committee.

I personally feel there is an under-the-table agreement of four, maybe five, guaranteed spots this season for the SEC. It’s awfully convenient that the new CFP strength-of-schedule rules were announced almost simultaneously with the expansion of the CFP playoffs. I think the SEC agreed to the expansion in return for a guarantee.

Let’s just go to South Bend this weekend, take care of business, and finish this thing 16-0 with a national title in Vegas before returning there eight months later for the ’27 season opener against Utah.
