Miami received some tough news Friday afternoon, as tight end Elija Lofton has officially been ruled out for Monday night’s College Football Playoff National Championship against Indiana.

It’s a significant loss for the Hurricanes and an especially tough blow for Lofton who will miss the biggest game of his career with a national title on the line.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported Friday afternoon that Miami tight end Elija Lofton has officially been ruled out for Monday night’s College Football Playoff National Championship against Indiana.

Lofton, who started four games this season, hauled in 23 receptions and three touchdowns for the Hurricanes. He was carted off the field during the Fiesta Bowl and had been listed as questionable before ultimately being downgraded to out.

Lofton won’t be the only Hurricane sidelined, either. Miami will also be without Malik Bryant, Daylyn Upshaw, and Donta Simpson for Monday’s game. Defensive back Xavier Lucas is expected to miss the first half after being ejected for targeting in the Fiesta Bowl win over Ole Miss.
