Miami baseball lands FIU Ace Easton Marks

The Miami Hurricanes have made a key move in the transfer portal today, landing FIU ace Easton Marks.

A 6-foot-1, 200 pound starter, Marks was dominant for FIU, earning first team C-USA honors. He pitched to a 3.49 ERA in 67 innings, racking up 72 strikeouts with 4.7 BB/ as opponents only hit .232 against him.

For Marks he boasts a 4 pitch mix: fastball, curve, cutter and change up. His fastball has been run up to 97 and consistently lives in that mid 90’s range, but I love his curveball. It’s an absolute wipeout pitch that he uses time and time again when he needs a swing and miss.

I absolutely love this pick up, a veteran who has both the stuff and experience to head a rotation for the upcoming year.

But with that being said, Marks is draft eligible and still intends to explore his options when it comes to going pro. If the Hurricanes can survive the draft process with Marks, this could become one of the most crucial pick ups of their offseason.

For now, Marks becomes the second first team C-USA FIU Panther to join the Hurricanes, joining Brylan West who committed back in May.

The Hurricanes have now landed five players in the portal for the upcoming season (Marks, West, Sheahan, Taylor, Copeland), and there’s more to come soon.

Got it. So if we had higher expectations for our team, this dude should be Saturday at best.

@Sebastian Font do we know if were looking at him as friday or will still try to get another ace?
On your first point I feel like Arkansas is like an LSU comparison still, their saturday guy was the one that threw the no-no. Marks would be a Saturday guy for all of the ACC (unless I'm completely forgetting about somebody, correct me if needed), and the majority of the SEC.

I think we're probably going to look for another starter, maybe not "Ace" (Cause as it stands its Ciscar, DeRias, Marks, Evans). You could lose two of those to the draft and obviously don't want to rely on freshman.

And I think he's looked at as a friday guy, nothing is obviously finalized but he has the stuff

Especially with the offensive injection (More to come), we shouldn't have to rely as hard as we did on pitching. Ex- being able to get away with some of Hugus' 4 run starts

That’s two from FIU now. When do they pitch a fit and refuse to play us FGCU-style?

On a related note, FIU has more than 20 players in the portal - on par with some schools that had coaching changes.

Excellent and thorough response, I appreciate that.

Obviously still a lot of missing pieces to the team, but from the trajectory im seeing, im not too sure this is a Omaha level pitching staff (bullpen looks fringe also). I think we need to add atleast two more pitchers that could have regular roles for Omaha level teams.

Ideally, we get a friday pitcher and have Mark's on sat and ciscar on sunday. Evans midweek. And Derias as a high leverage receiver.

Yup, I forgot to add my point about bullpen. We are still looking to add there.

And I think DeRias is interesting because as much as his stuff can play into a relief role, I think he’s still too raw for the leverage play. He needs to get a rhythm going which was why he was successful as a starter. I definitely think that’s a path they can explore though.

Ya, they seemed to get decimated, as it was starters in addition to role players.

They should get the best available proven pitchers that they can get in the portal.you can never have enough pitchers in baseball especially good ones.when you got good pitching you will always be competitive

good pick up. Replaces Hugus.

He might be a Saturday guy on a bunch of ACC teams. But what does that get you? With no Friday guy.

Like CanesCanes said if we want to be a real threat you need a dude on Fridays. I’m not saying we need Liam Doyle every year. But you need a guy who even when he is off he gives you 6 and a chance to win and when he is on…forget it. Ciscar should be a Sunday type for us. 6-7 innings. Frustrate guys with funk. Tons of strikes. Can go for sweeps and feel good or when you need to win the series you know hes going to be the bulldog.
