When the offense was struggling to find its rhythm, freshman running back Javian Mallory was in to save the day.
Mallory helped the Hurricanes defeat the Florida State Seminoles 43-35 in a double-overtime thriller at Hard Rock Stadium. He led the team in rushing with 108 yards across 13 carries and two touchdowns. He ran really hard all day long and wore the Seminoles' defense out. Mallory's longest rush was a 25-yarder, and he also averaged 8.3 yards per carry
Hurricanes starting running back Mark Fletcher was a little banged up last night, forcing Javian Mallory to step up, and he delivered in big ways. His two rushing touchdowns came in critical moments--punching one in during the fourth quarter and another in overtime.
Pro Football Focus gave him a 77.0 grade, which is good enough to be the fourth-highest graded player on the offensive end from last night's contest. He also played in 28 snaps.
After the game, he received high praise from Miami Hurricanes signal-caller Darian Mensah, who stated that it was his breakout game:
"Yeah, kind of his breakout game. And the kid has done an excellent job this week, but always, he's done an awesome job with his preparation, and I've got a lot of trust in the young freshman. So his role will only continue to grow, but, I think he's got a bright future ahead."
If you have been reading on here a while, you would know that the praise didn't just come out of nowhere, as he turned heads in the offseason--especially from coach Mario Cristobal:
"Since the moment he got here, he's just a very physical runner. You almost underestimate him. You expect him to be really good. That's why we recruited him. But when he takes people on, the collisions and the force that he generates on contact and his contact balance is really impressive."
Social media has been comparing him to former Hurricane running back Frank Gore. They have a very identical style of play--especially with the physicality.
Coming out of West Boca Raton High School, he was rated as a four-star prospect and the nation's No. 38 running back in the 2026 class. It was great to see Mallory out there in a rivalry game that means so much to the players and coaches. He delivered in big crucial moments and will continue getting reps as a backup.
Great job 21.
