The University of Miami men’s basketball team bolstered its frontcourt with the signing of center Somto Cyril, head coach Jai Lucas announced Thursday.

Cyril arrives in Coral Gables following a breakout season at Georgia where he established himself as one of the nation’s most efficient post players.

The Enugu, Nigeria, native earned SEC All-Defensive Team honors after leading the conference and ranking among the top 15 nationally in blocked shots at 2.2 per game. He averaged 9.3 points and a team-high 5.4 rebounds while starting 32 games.

A dynamic finisher around the rim, Cyril led the nation in dunks with 83 and set Georgia’s single-season field goal percentage record at 75.9%. He registered the most blocks in a single game by a SEC play last season when he swatted eight shots against Arkansas.

“Somto is someone who fits exactly how we want to play,” Lucas said. “He is a gamechanger on the defensive end and someone who immediately elevates our presence at the rim. He is one of the most disruptive players in the country and offensively, he is incredibly efficient.”

Over two seasons at Georgia, Cyril recorded 125 career blocks in 66 games while averaging 7.0 points and 4.6 rebounds.

Prior to his collegiate career, Cyril was a consensus four-star prospect and ranked as the No. 43 recruit in the Class of 2024 by 247Sports.com, as well as No. 47 by On3.com, No. 49 by ESPN.com and No. 56 by Rivals.com.

He starred at Overtime Elite, where he averaged 8.1 points, 7.4 rebounds and 3.2 blocks per game while shooting 66.2 percent from the field.
