*On Seantrel Henderson’s expectations from others and if he ever tells him to forget about it
“Absolutely. Again I think hopefully he’ll continue to be process oriented. He is in a good place right now. I think he is starting to understand that discipline is the only way to go. If you're worried about what everybody else thinks or where you should go, people projecting him here and there and all that, what about adhering to a process and enjoying the journey, enjoying your time here. We’ve seen how good you can get, I’ll tell you this we haven’t seen the best of him yet. I promise you we haven’t seen the best of him. Like I said, he has had a good summer. I’m as anxious as anybody to see what he’s got here at camp. And just the fact that he had a little ankle and he battled through it and he’s back out already, I think it says a lot about his focus right now.
**On Henderson’s struggles last year losing his close friend and how he made a change following it.
“We noticed, but I didn’t think we got all of Seantrel yet. We’re finally starting to get all of Seantrel, in other words a total commitment from him. So, we’ll see if that continues I know he’s got leaders around him with (Brandon) Linder and Shayon Green and Stephen Morris and those guys can help him do it that, but hopefully he can continue to make the strides that he has.”
**On what’s Henderson’s ceiling in terms of potential and skill.
“You guys know where the ceiling is. It’s as good as he wants to be, but more importantly, it’s him being the best he can be. Let’s see how good you can be and if I can get him to trust that, if the coaches can get him to trust that it’s just about him being as good as he can be and trusting the process and the execution of it I know he’ll be happy with the outcome, I know he will be. We’re starting to see that trust, man I’d like to see this thing go to a whole another level this year, in the next month, I really would.”
**On the difference he’s noticed in the nutrition for the football team
“Oh yeah, Tony’s (Musto) done an incredible job and you know we’re just really emphasizing it. Hopefully, Friday when we take you guys through here you’ll see some of the things we’re doing for the guys, you know just to make sure it’s always around them. Our “Rebuild, Recover, Refuel” philosophy that Tony has brought, but yeah we are over there at the bodpod, we’re giving guys specific diets, we’re meeting their nutritional needs which is really important, So we are grateful to the administration and Blake (James) for their support in that capacity and then obviously the culture has changed in terms of that. It’s no longer okay to be a 208 pound linebacker, it’s just not these guys are big and strong. We’ve made a lot of progress and Tony’s had a lot to do with it.”
**If nutrition was a big emphasis when he played football.
“No, not really. I mean no. That was a long time ago (laughs), but I mean nutrition has always been important, but I think we are at a totally different level now and if your not trying to be the best from a nutritional standpoint or from a strength and conditioning standpoint or from a preventive measure standpoint in the training rooms and those things, then you’re behind and I think Vinny (Scavo), (Andrew) Swasey and Tony (Musto) have done an unbelievable job of coming together. They're all interconnected now, which wasn’t the case when I got here, So I think we’ve made a lot of progress there.”
**On the possibility of Malcolm Bunche being moved around the offensive line
“We’ll continue to do it. I think the biggest thing is to get everybody settled in, so we can reduce the mental errors and to a point where we can scrimmage and play fast, but after that we’ll make some combination change.”
**On how his team is very honest with head injuries
“Well I just think we’re great at it, not many places have a great institute like we do, but obviously we have a world class medical facility and it’s something I believe in as a head coach we take great preventative measures. We go to great lengths in terms of the prevention, the education, the diagnosis and the integration of the student athletes and like I said before what can be more important then that. So, we’re proud of what we do and we think we’re at the front of it and we want to stay out front.”
**On any update regarding Preston Dewey
“No update. Once again I’ll keep you guys updated.”
** On whether any new injuries have happened lately
“The biggest thing for me is to wait until Danny (Isidora) sees a specialist and then we’ll have a determination. I know everybody wants to jump the gun, but we’ve also jumped the gun erroneously in the past. I don’t want to do that I want to give him the benefit and his family the benefit of seeing a specialist and we’ll release it through Chris Yandle and it will be accurate.”
** On whether Chickillo’s ankle is okay
“Yeah, I think he is okay, again I was surprised he wasn’t ready to go again today, so we’ll see if he can go tomorrow. Sometimes with ankles you wake up sore and then it loosens up throughout the day. He might be ready to go by the end of the day or tomorrow. So, I don’t know to what extent.
**On whether he was encouraged by Sunny Odogwu’s play from yesterday
“Yeah, I think Sonny is in a yellow today. He is gonna integrate today and then maybe he’ll be full go. We see that Seantrel has skipped that phase and he is doing well. I think that Deon Bush is doing well, just keeping you posted on that. Deon’s been running around and making progress there.”
** On whether any newcomers will be here this week
“As soon as I’m allowed to release names I’ll let you guys know. I appreciate you asking the question, but you have to understand that I don’t come out here every morning to get beat up about these questions. I would just prefer to say “Chris can you just release it so I don’t have to answer anymore questions.”
** On exactly what happened to Chickillo
“Just a little ankle deal, change of direction or something and he just rolled it a little.”
** Talking about Pat O’Donnells performance as of late
“ If you were to ask me who is the most impressive player on your team right now in the two days of camp so far, I would say Pat O’Donnell. Pat O’Donnell is mature, poised, locked in and he’s on a mission right now. We’re glad he is here, we’re very fortunate that he is here. ‘Coach is there anything I can do for the team?’, he is leading, he is in great shape, he’s long , he’s got a good leg, he is doing punts and kickoffs for us right now. It’s been a huge bonus for us right now, a credit to the staff, that he got a release and we made a call out when he was in Palm Beach, next thing you know he was visiting and then he was a ‘Cane. So again, that’s part of who we are as a staff, we’re going to keep active in that, always trying to improve our team.
** More on Pat O’Donnell and his attitude
“He’s obviously a kid who has pro aspirations and he is gonna be in graduate school and he is a bright kid. It’s a great situation for him. He is back home, he is going to graduate school and he is keeping his pro aspirations alive with a team that needs him. So, it’s a great fit for him. We obviously believe it’s a great fit for us and we’re excited.
