As an unranked player with one offer, 2020 WR Ja’Vontae Williams went into last weekend as a virtual unknown in the recruiting world. Consider that changed, at least in the world of the Miami Hurricanes. Williams lit up Miami’s 7-on-7 tournament on Sunday, recording 5 TD’s on the way to leading his Glades Central team to the championship.
“I felt good about my performance,” Williams said. “But, I felt better because we won as a team.”
After the tournament, Miami’s WR coach himself extended to Williams an invitation to Paradise Camp next month.
“It was good, I was very excited,” Williams said. “It came from Ron Dugans.”
However, UM is still waiting on offering Williams a scholarship. The staff will take the opportunity to see him up close again and make that decision down the road. As for Williams, he is confident he has what it takes to earn that offer next month.
“I’m pretty sure I will get it after the Paradise Camp,” Williams said. “But no, they didn’t really say anything about it the other day.”
So, why does the UM program appeal to Williams?
“I like the environment and it’s close to home.”
Williams’ one offer right now is from the Oregon Ducks, but he’s still hearing a lot from a few other top Power 5 programs that are close to offering.
“I hear a lot from Nebraska, Penn State, and Pittsburgh,” Williams said. “There’s more too, but I can’t really remember them all right now.”
While it’s still early in Williams’ recruitment and he has no decision timeline in sight, the 6’1” 190 pounder does know what he’s looking for in a college program.
“A school that’s going to get me to the next level in life.”
