So yeah, Miami doesn’t exactly get a breather.
After getting through Texas A&M in the first round of the College Football Playoffs, the Canes now run straight into Buckeyes of Ohio State.
If you don’t follow the Big Ten closely, here’s what Miami fans need to know about the Ohio State Buckeyes:
(2) OHIO STATE BUCKEYES
Record: 12–1 (9–0 Big Ten)
ESPN Index Ranking: 2
Highest AP Top 25 Ranking: 1
Best Wins:
vs. No. 1 Texas Longhorns (season opener) — 14-7 W, at Washington Huskies 24-6 W, vs. Illionis 34-16 W, vs. Michigan Wolverines 27-9
Worst Losses: vs. No. 1 Indiana Hoosiers, 13-10 (Big Ten Championship Game)
Coach: Ryan Day (7th season)
Things To Know:
As we all know The Horseshoe, it is massive and historic and is one of the biggest stadiums in College Football. The crowd can get loud of course, but once you’re actually inside, it’s not nearly as impressive as it seems. The stadium is old, the seats are old, and the concourses are always packed. Trying to move around feels like you’re in New York City during Christmas time.
I remember last March going there for a sold-out Hockey game which was a freezing day and grabbing a hot chocolate… and it wasn’t even hot. That pretty much sums up the experience.
Big and iconic? Absolutely. Comfortable or enjoyable? Not really. The Horseshoe is more about tradition and capacity than being a stadium you actually want to spend hours in. Maybe that’s just my experience.
A 9.5-Point Dog: Anyways moving on from my opinion stuff. As the lower seed, Miami is the underdog in the game with an opening line of 9.5 points. ESPN gives Ohio State a 70.5 percent chance to beat the Hurricanes.
Picked 2nd in the Big Ten: The panel that evaluated Ryan Day’s team didn’t get voted the No. 1 team in the preseason Big Ten rankings as Penn State who didn’t even finish inside the top-3 in the Big Ten was picked No. 1 team. The Buckeyes did make the media eat their words as they finished 9-0 in the Big Ten.
All Time Series: The all time series between Miami and Ohio State is tied at 2–2, with their most recent meeting coming in 2011, which the Hurricanes won the latest matchup 24‑6. Ohio State’s 2003 Fiesta Bowl win over Miami in double overtime still haunts Miami today.
Head Coach Ryan Day: Coach Ryan Day is in his seventh season as Ohio State’s head football coach, but his ties to the Buckeyes run deep. Day played quarterback at the University of New Hampshire and made his name at Ohio State, where he previously served as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator before taking over as head coach.
We’ll have plenty more to come in the days ahead. Until then, here’s the path again:
