Former Miami Hurricane basketball assistant coach Bill Courtney, who took over as head coach for half the last season after Jim Larranaga stepped down, has tragically passed away at the age of 55.

Here’s what Temple head coach Adam Fisher expressed following his death:

"I am shocked and heartbroken by the tragic news and passing of my close friend Bill Courtney," said Temple head coach Adam Fisher. "Bill made such a big impact on our program in such a short time. He was one of the most respected coaches in the country - thoughtful, prepared, and deeply committed to the game and to winning the right way. Bill made every program he touched better, and his loss is felt profoundly by everyone who knew him. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Bill's family during this extremely difficult time."

Courtney spent the last five seasons at Miami, working alongside former Hurricanes head coach Jim Larrañaga. Together, they led the Hurricanes to three NCAA Tournament appearances, including a memorable journey to the 2023 Final Four.

After Larrañaga left and new head coach Jai Lucas came in, most of the previous coaching staff was not kept, which marked the end of Courtney's time in Miami. Courtney had previously been the head coach at Cornell from 2010 to 2016.

Rest In Peace, Bill Courtney.
