Fall Camp Intel: Defense

So overall, it sounds like Feagles and the OL are going to be the weak points this year, with us needing a bit more depth at CB before we are legit.
I'm okay with that. Sounds like we are 1 or 2 good classes away from being a contender every year, if we aren't already.

Only saying anything because I've read it several times now, but since when is a will linebacker an inside linebacker?

Nice writeup. Hopefully we hear some news about Wilder soon. Makes me nervous especially with what happened with Young last year.

Nice
A bit worried about the Willis-Bethel combo vs heavy run teams just due to them both being penetrating types so it could be boom or bust. Really need Ford to put his big boy pants out immediately but besides that, I think we are sitting pretty.

I'm not so sure Bethel is a penetrating type. He's known as one of the strongest guys on the team. I never saw him as a quick first step penetrator in his reps last season. I always saw him more as a gap integrity, hold my point of attack while pushing forward type. I expect Bethel to be solid yet unspectacular. Personally, I think the fact that he has held off Tito and Ford has to be looked at as somewhat of a positive with regards to what he brings to the table.

I get that he doesn't have the listed weight everyone wants, but I'll take a fist that weighs 285 pounds any day over an open hand that weighs 315.

Need Dean to make a big jump this year just to be serviceable. We can't have another dee delaney out there getting beat every down. And the news on Feagles is sad. Could be that we don't have anyone pushing for his job. He has good form but make direct contact with the ball, man.

If he shanks a punt when the game is close, I fully expect Quan to give him an ear full.

How many busted assignments leading to 70 yard touchdowns before we get McCloud off the field in passing situations? Perhaps I'm a cynic.

I am a very worried. Was praying that Ford would at least be ready by now. Guess not. Thank god Tito is here. He could be the saving grace for us. If LSU figures out that passing the ball on us aint gonna work due to our pass rush and our elite secondary guys and that middle of the D is a little soft, it could be trouble.
What makes you think the middle of the D is soft? Haven't even played a game yet. We have more depth at DT than last year. I like Willis and Tito bringing it as seniors. They will ball out in their last go around. Plus ad in Demetrius Jackson sliding down inside at times. That makes 5 dudes in rotation at DT not including any freshman. What's not to like?

#20 I just hope all the coach praise of him comes to fruition. And feagles better get his **** together. I'm completely fine with adding another scholarship punter and feagles getting the axe if it means no more 10 yd punts.

My concern is with Bethel holding up against the run. We had Ford penciled in as the run stuffer and he didn't live up to that, at least in the spring/fall camp. Bethel to me is a bulked up DE, is he playing the role of the 1-tech DT? The good thing is we will know what we have from opening tip.

Poster two posts below said it best. Bethel isn't a run stuffing DT. Would love to be wrong. But in a perfect world he would be Willis's backup. Now if Tito can be that guy then we are in business. I am just not sure about Bethel holding up against the run for long periods of time if LSU starts to go to smash mouth football. (which unless Coach O is a **** good poker player sounds like they are not. Sounds like he is living and dying with this 4 WR set offense which plays right into our hands)

I yelled at the tv every time Feagles punted last year. I’d like to keep yelling at the tv to a minimum this year when he comes on to punt

run defense was suspect for much of last year. we all saw it. I know we havent heard much from Coach Simpson. What kind of a teacher is he? I ho

I share the same concerns. Our run defense got gashed last year at times. Even with Norton and RJ. Hopefully its been fixed under Simpson
