At this point his only choice would be to rejoin the team next season. If he applies foe the draft after this season, he'll end up like Joe Yearby.

Gerald Willis is 22 right now, if he chooses to come back he'll be 24 should he make it to an NFL roster. Those years count to NFL front offices. If he's not trying to get his degree immediately, then he should work as hard as he can in the classroom, forego college football and try to turn pro. He can always come back to finish his degree, if he wants it.

Unless your draft stock can be dramatically improved (Delaney, D.), coming back to play for free is dumb.
He turned 22 five days ago. He'd probably be in a similar position to Ryan Glasgow, who is turning 24 in a month. He was a 4th round pick out of Michigan. Guess it's up to Willis to think it'd be better long-term financial decision to be a likely UDFA (this year) or a 4th-5th pick next year.

His draft stock can be drastically improved. He needs more film.

He'll be flying around making plays in the spring.

not a big deal, the bears drafted leonard floyd out of georgia last year in the top 10 and he was 24 during his rookie year

No one wanted to listen to The Franchise, rokulika and @me on this one.

What were you guys thinking?

I didn't give this a ton of thought when I first heard about it, because I immediately deduced this is something either personal and/or medically related, and that therefore a tight lid would be kept on it, until such time as Willis decides to either talk about it, or someone betrays his confidence.

Unlike others, I definitely do not think this was some grandmaster chess strategy to make him available next year because we're good on d-tackles this year. It just doesn't work that way.

I disagree. He's unlikely to get drafted as of now. If he comes back next year, he can improve his position alot. Huge difference in money if he comes back and plays himself into the 3rd, 4th or 5th round.

Him coming back is a win and him playing next year is an even bigger win for both parties...

Chise said he'd never set foot on campus again.......so, what exactly are you talking about?

Is he paying for school, can you be on scholarship if you aren't on the roster?

The Broncos just drafted a 26 year-old OL in the 1st round.

But good call, it'd be better for Willis to just leave and be undrafted. Right.

You must have been the same moron advising Yearby to turn pro

I dont disagree on either post but you could argue that Willis doesn't have all that much mileage on the odometer given that quite frankly, he hasn't played all that much in college.

I talked to moms and she told me he never left the team... Don't know where there this came from

Valid point about his (game) odometer but time is time. The preparation, the practices - those count too. And he's wasted a lot through immaturity, etc. If school isn't his priority, and it may not be right now (and this goes for any kid, imo), then he needs to go pro.

I'm with Richt on the idea of recruiting to reload and expecting that kids are in for 3-4 years after high school. Plus, if someone's good enough to go pro, they're good enough; the draft will recognize it. I'm usually surprised at how little attention is put on film instead of the combine year after year. He needs to get ready for the next stage in his life: football or life beyond football. Either way I wish him well.

Good job, Big Fella. Now keep in shape and be ready for next season. Can't focus on football if you don't have your personal ish in order. He did the right thing.
