Depth chart released by Miami

Our offense on paper leaves a lot to be desired. OL depth looks like a problem. QB holds a lot of questions and every time Homer touches the ball I fear a fumble.

The defensive line is just awesome. LB is pretty solid but the secondary looks extremely suspect.

I had the shades on all summer. This depth chart smacked me back to reality a bit. Hopefully Walton has a major season as expected and Spencer Whipple exceeds expectations.

Who cares what you personally think about our team on paper? And "Spencer Whipple"? Really? Good one.

Thank god the season is starting soon. I can't wait to laugh at posts like yours in a few months

Is Pinkney #2 due to suspension or did Smith beat him out?

FWIW: Diaz himself said last week that he's not sure who the starters would be without the MP suspension.

I think he has to say that. Smith has improved greatly, and Pinkney has missed majority of fall practice with injury. Smith might have won the start just based on health.

Good point. Pinkney was supposedly on the bike a lot

Peddling with one leg mind you...:monkey-serious:

I had the shades on all summer. This depth chart smacked me back to reality a bit. Hopefully Walton has a major season as expected and Spencer Whipple exceeds expectations.

A starting trio of McCloud, Quarterman and Pinckney with Mike Smith, Charles Perry, providing depth with true freshmen Jennings and Wilder chipping in qualifies as more than "pretty solid" to me and that's not being a homer.

Now, about that secondary. Could you go into better detail on why you think they are extremely suspect? Let's break the secondary down.

We have true sophomore Malek Young who coming off a freshman campaign in which he kept improving and came on very strong towards the end. Young follows this up with an excellent Spring and Fall camp. It is very apparent that Young is legit and will only get better. Big play CB will thrive in the nickel role and certainly good enough to play outside.

Then we have 4th year Junior Michael Jackson who actually had some very good offers out of high school. Jackson is a kid with good length that was a bit raw and was more a developmental prospect with a potentially very good ceiling. Golden and Dno didn't get much out of him do he gets pegged with the JAG label. Once Richt, Diaz and Rumph come in, Jackson begins to get real coaching and he starts to develop and realize his potential. The addition of Bandy, Dean and Delaney lights a fire within the young man and the competition brings out the best in him to the point where he earns a starting spot opposite Dee Delaney. This leads me to believe that the kid is legit and not the product of a lack of talent at the position.

Jhavonte Dean. JUCO transfer who was committed to Alabama at one point and considered to be in the top 2 JUCOs at his position. Dean has length and speed. He also has an urgency about him knowing that this is his time to show out. Right now Dean is working his way into using proper technique and improving his tackling skills. Look for Dean to steadily improve throughout the season and fight to gain a starting spot. In terms of talent, Dean definitely belongs here.

Dee Delaney. Grad transfer from Citadel who decided to forgo the draft where he would have gone around the 4th round in order to show his ability against top notch D1 competition. Another tall(6'2") corner with good speed, coverage and playmaking ability. Very mature leader with great insticts, high football IQ and the willingness to be physical. Won a starting job.

Lastly we have Trajan Bandy. Bandy was the best CB prospect in Florida IMO. He's on the shorter side but is a pure lockdown CB with excellent speed, instincts and tremendous big play ability. Bandy jumped in from the get and has competed hard. Bandy is a natural and has shown the coaches that he can be counted on immediately. Look for Bandy to steadily improve during his freshman year. He will be very good inside as a nickel CB and could play a more centerfield safety type role in certain packages/situations.

I honestly think that we have a very good situation at CB. This group of 5 CBs is better than we have had for quite some time. I think chemistry will become better as the season progresses. Barring major injury I really like what we have with this unit.

Safety is the great unknown and will be the peice of the puzzle that either allows this defense to be elite or just very good.

Jaquan Johnson. Undersized but plays big. Johnson is a leader and instinctive playmaker that will bring it for 4 quarters in every game.

Sheldrick Redwine. Redwine is moving to SS where he will start opposite Jaquan Johnson. He seems a much more natural fit at safety as he didn't quite have the smooth hips and recovery speed to be a quality starter at CB. I'm optimistic about him but at the same time I'm not sure what to expect. Redwine is key. If he can be a legit starter and play consistently well this defense will suffocate everyone they play.

Robert Knowles. According to Diaz he has worked his way into the no 3 spot at safety. While not an elite prospect, Knowles does posses the tools to be a solid contributer.

Romeo Finley. Before Fall camp I was beginning to write his off as a JAG or a candidate to move to LB. It seems that the coaching and competition has begun to bring out the best in him as the light appears to have come on for Finley. What this means exactly in terms of production on the field during the season is open to speculation. I would expect him to continue improving and be able to hold down the fort should someone go down. Finley seems to be a more physical in the box type to me. We will see

Amari Carter. Carter is an excellent prospect with a high ceiling. He is a very physical safety who thrives on contact and making punishing hits. Carter is very bright and mature for his age with a great football IQ. He is very coachable and I would expect him to push Redwine hard as the season goes on.

Derrick Smith. Smith is my big wildcard in this position group. He may be the most natural all around safety on the rooster. Forgetting the 2018 kids for a minute I believe Smith has the ability to develop into a starting FS at UM. The question with Smith to me is how long it will take him to develop. In reality the sooner the better because once Jobe, Hall and Frierson arrive it will be that much tougher.

To summarize, I really like the group we have at CB. We have a great mix of guys that move from nickel to outside that possess speed, athleticism and coverage ability.

At safety I see more question marks and this is probably where most of the concern stems from. Outside of Jaquan Johnson, nobody has really proven themselves and outside of Johnson and Redwine there isn't much live game experience. Also the 2 prospects with the highest ceilings at safety(Carter&Smith) are both true freshmen. Im sure Jaquan will have a great season and make plays but we need to find at least 2 more guys here to count on when the band is playing. It may have to be a group effort especially early on.

J.Johnson has yet to prove himself also...

Yes but JJ has some experience and I am confident he will be given the opportunity to make a lot of plays in this defense. I'm not worried about Jaquan Johnson.

Spencer Whipple? Are you referring to Malik Rosier? If you are then that comparison is laughable. Also, our offense has its weak points but to say that it leaves much to be desired on paper is doom, gloom and premenstrual hand wringing at it's worst.

Our OL is not the 2001 OL. Ok fine but they should be solid. Depth is not the greatest. At RB I'm good with Walton and Homer with the understanding that if Burns stays healthy we may have a great trio there. At WR we have AR82, a steady Berrios, a healthy Cager, with Mullins and a resurgent Langham for depth in addition to Jeff Thomas and Mike Harley. Two speed merchants that are ready to contribute now. TE is thin but Herndon is versatile and a standout. Malik Rosier will determine how it all works and I am actually very high on the kid. I think he could be better than many imagined.

My opinion is that it may take a few games for the offense to gel and develop a cohesive identity. I am high on this offense and this entire team in general.

All looks good. Need O line health. In no universe should Berrios be starting over Thomas

Yeah, no way in **** a Senior who's been an established quality starter for 3 seasons should get the nod over a true Freshman who just got to campus and has been nursing a hamstring. That is just nuts.

Thomas will make a lot of money playing this game. Come next year Berrios will have a civilian job. Thomas is a threat to house it from anywhere. If you can't see the talent disparity I don't know what to tell you. I think BB will be good. JT can be great

WR for the New England Patriots is a civilian job?

He can back up AUSTIN PFENNINGER on the Pats...Book it!

Good to see Gaynor on the 2-deep, but man is our OLine depth scary after the starting unit.

No thanks to Bummy Odogfood and Prick Linder. Instead of competing to make themselves better they shuttered at the chance and ran off like entitled brats that automatically thought they were gonna start. These two are a prime reflection of the soft *** culture our last staph was breeding around here. I hope everybody on the OL shines.

Richt has done well to weed out the knuckleheads.

As a starting safety but was very solid at nickel last year and safety is his natural position.

So redwine is at SS? I thought he was at fs.

Good point. Players suspended for the opening game for "unspecified violation of team rules" is usually as predictable as death and taxes.

Michael Pickney penciled in at first team exercise bike.

Underrated post. It means nobody did anything too stupid over the off season. There's almost always one or two guys suspended for the opener. Especially if it's against a weak opponent.
