Class Impact: Keshawn Washington exits

Stefan Adams
2020 South Dade LB/S Keshawn Washington decommitted from the Canes yesterday morning.

The 6-2, 180-pounder is currently a 4-star in the national rankings. According to the 247Sports Composite, Washington is the #274 player nationally, #21 OLB in the country, and the #44 player in the Sunshine State. His decommitment leaves Miami’s #2 class ranking for 2020 unchanged on both 247Sports and Rivals.

The Background

Washington committed to Miami back in July just before Paradise Camp, and he was the second of his teammates (Jaiden Francois and Jonathan Denis) to commit to Miami in rapid succession within hours of each other. Washington was likely to play striker linebacker at Miami and had the exact frame that could grow into a force at the position. Unfortunately, the South Dade Canes are no more and lasted less than 5 months on the commit list at Miami. Denis was the first of the trio to leave and, after that, you got the feeling that the others could soon be on their way out as well. Manny Diaz’s departure was simply the excuse Washington needed to open things up.

Future of the Class

Washington's decommitment brings the total class numbers down to 8, and leaves Miami with no linebackers in the class.

Another that could end up at striker linebacker in this class is Largo 4-star Jayion McCluster, who also plays RB in high school. McCluster has named UM to his early favorites along with FSU, LSU, and Oregon, and Miami has certainly made him a priority in the early going. The Canes love his athleticism and versatility and feel he is a perfect fit for their defense. As long as Miami continues to push McCluster, they will be hard to beat for his services.

As for some pure outside linebacker options, look no further than STA 4-star teammates Derek Wingo and Devon Betty. The pair were both backups for a loaded Raiders defense last season, but will get a full opportunity to shine in their senior seasons with the entire STA linebacking core graduating. While Wingo seems to be an Ohio State lean right now, Betty has loved Miami’s approach to playing defense and really has an affinity for the Canes. It wouldn’t shock me to see Betty in this class sometime soon.
