2020 Hewitt-Trussville (AL) WR Dazalin Worsham committed to the Miami Hurricanes this afternoon.
The 6-0, 185-pounder is currently a consensus 4-star in the national rankings. According to the 247Sports Composite, Worsham is the #289 player nationally, #50 WR in the country, and the #13 player in Alabama. His commitment moves Miami’s class ranking to #16 overall on 247Sports, but moves the Canes up to #12 overall on Rivals.
The Player
Worsham’s commitment to the Canes comes as a departure from where his recruitment was trending a week ago, as he was last on record saying Alabama was his leader. Worsham took an official visit to Miami in June, left by telling the staff he was coming, and it seemed like only a matter of time before he publicly became part of the class. He even decommitted from the Crimson Tide after the Miami trip. However, the months went on and nothing came from Worsham or his camp. Worsham started considering Alabama again after they started pushing for him even harder since his decommitment from the Crimson Tide. Worsham has also been a regular at Alabama home games during the season, so this was a great out of state pull for Manny Diaz and Taylor Stubblefield.
On the field, Worsham has been one of the most productive WR’s in Alabama high school football history. He leaves Hewitt-Trussville as the school's all-time leading receiver, having caught 215 passes for 2,369 yards and 28 touchdowns, while ranking eighth all-time in catches in state history. At the Opening Nashville Regional in April 2018, Worsham recorded a 4.81 40-yard dash, 4.44 short shuttle time, and 30.70 inch vertical leap as a rising junior. He did not test as a senior due to having double hip surgery over the offseason.
On tape, Worsham is a smooth and athletic strider. Plays with sudden feet on routes underneath. Will take what the defense gives him and shows ability as a possession receiver. Huge threat in the screen game as an elusive runner after the catch in the open field with a shred of daylight. Impressive body control in every direction to haul in passes. Willing downfield blocker. He looks a tick less explosive when comparing his junior and senior film, and his senior season was less productive than his sophomore and junior campaign, both of which could be attributed to recovery from his double hip surgery. That type of surgery at that age will always be cause for concern when talking about future injuries down the line, but Worsham certainly has the potential to become a top-end receiver in the ACC.

Worsham’s commitment gives UM 21 total verbals in the 2020 class, and he joins IMG Academy (FL) 4-star WR Michael Redding and Deerfield Beach (FL) 3-star Xavier Restrepo as receivers in Category20. The Canes have pretty clearly been chasing 4 WR’s in this class since the get-go, so it’s safe to say there’s one spot left right now.
Miami has pretty much zeroed in on that one target and have been recruiting American Heritage (FL) WR Douglas Emilien very hard for close to two months now. Many see the late-bloomer Emilien as the best receiver in South Florida, and he certainly has been one of the most productive. Miami has brought him in for multiple home game visits and are really making him feel like a priority. Emilien just took an official visit to UVA, and has WVU and Cincinnati set for OV’s in the coming weeks, but as of yet, there has been no indication that any of those schools have positioned themselves to pull an upset on Miami. He’s also set his UM official visit weekend for December 13th weekend, the same weekend all the commits are coming and the last weekend before the early signing period, so that’s another positive for Miami. There isn’t much in Miami’s way in terms of locking him up that weekend at this point.
If the Canes do get Emilien on board, WR recruiting would likely shut down, but it should be noted that Miami has some backup options lined-up just in case. The Canes have been laying the groundwork with local prospects such as Miami Palmetto’s Kentron Poitier and McArthur’s Damien Alford, bringing both in for multiple home game visits this season. Miami has also been keeping tabs on FSU commit and Venice WR Malachi Wideman now that the Noles have no head coach, and Stubblefield recently offered Kyren Lacy from Louisiana.

By 2020, Miami will lose KJ Osborn to graduation, and it’s always possible that Jeff Thomas could leave early. That would leave Miami with only 5 returning scholarship receivers; 3 of those (Mike Harley, Dee Wiggins, Mark Pope) have seen heavy playing time this season, and the staff loves Jeremiah Payton’s potential for next year and beyond. With that said, none of these players have proven at this point that they can be the surefire #1 option week in and week out. So, while there doesn’t seem to be a ton of room in the rotation available, it feels as if at least one receiver from the 2020 class will be needed to provide depth right away, and a true transcendent talent that shows they are ready to play immediately could always emerge in camp to become a starter. Miami really is just stacking chips at receiver and it’s hard to say which 2020 recruit will rise to the top, but Worsham would be wise to early enroll like his classmates Redding and Restrepo to give himself the best chance at seeing the field in 2020; it should also be noted he has the slightest build of the three, so he needs the college weight room/nutrition plan the most.
