The Miami Hurricanes moved to 2-0 in ACC play and 11-2 overall on Wednesday night with a huge early ACC season win over #16 Clemson.

Without star guard Wooga Poplar who is nursing an ankle injury, the Canes scored 60 second-half points to pull away from the Tigers for a 95-82 victory. Miami trailed 41-35 at halftime before their surge. Freshman Kyshawn George started in place of Poplar and was pivotal for the Canes with 12 first-half points including 4 threes.

The Canes shot lights out – including 53% from the field, 46% from three, and 14-15 from the free throw line with all of those attempts coming in the second half.

Miami point guard Nijel Pack was a catalyst offensively, scoring 25 points and giving Clemson fits in the second half with his outside shooting. Matthew Cleveland and Norchad Omier each scored 23 on the night – Omier had a strong effort against Clemson star PJ Hall who had a good night offensively, but fouled out of the game with under 4 minutes remaining in the game.

The Clemson Tigers came into this game 11-1, and as of now this is considered a “Quad 1” win for the Hurricanes – an important metric used in NCAA tournament seeding. Next up for the Canes is Wake Forest on the road this Saturday which will be another great test. The Demon Deacons have won 8 straight games including a 2-0 ACC record and 10-3 overall.

Winning without Wooga was impressive. Add to that the fact we are building more depth than I thought we’d have preseason and we are definitely in for a run at the ACC title and a fun March run as well.
