Full disclosure here, I graduated from UCF in 2004 but grew up watching and attending UM football games. I've been a Hurricanes fan literally as long as I can remember. I have never been a UM student.

So for the Canes fans on this board who also did not go to UM, how do you handle/answer the over used and tired question... "Did you go to Miami?"

I find that 99% of the time, the person asking knows full well that I did not go there, and they ask in such a condescending tone. Like they are a better fan of their team because they went there.

Why is it only with Miami fans? I mean, how many Notre Dame fans to do you know that actually went there? It seems like ND fans are all over the country, but how many of them actually went there? And are they also asked "Did you go to Notre Dame?"

If you went to UM, good for you, that's awesome, it is an amazing university.
I made the choice to stay closer to home at go to UCF.

Also, I know plenty of F$U and UFelon fans that didn't go to those schools, so why does it matter so much that I didn't go to Miami?

I've come up with a few thoughts and questions.
1) If I'm less of a fan because I didn't go there, by that same backwards logic, are you not allowed to be a fan UNTIL you go there?
2) What about pro teams, living in Orlando, am I not allowed to be a fan of the Dolphins?
3) What about coaches at schools, Golden didn't graduate from UM, so he can't be a fan?

Discuss.

I can sum it up pretty easily. That question is asked by most "established" teams fans as a way to say "you only became a fan of Miami because they win". Unfortunately I don't get asked that question much any more.

FWIW the absolute most passionate, hardcore 'Cane fans I know never spent a minute in class there, they buy multiple sport season tickets and contribute to the Hurricane club as well.
As an example my entire family is second and third generation Miamians, well over 25 of us are die-hards yet only two of us went to school there.
I challenge anyone to tell my 78 year old mother she's not a real fan because she didn't go there. Good luck with that...

i didn't go there; my parents did. I live cross country and am a season ticket holder. Been a lifetime fan for 40 years.

I was an army brat so we moved a lot, the canes were always on TV and I fell in love with them. I remember wathching the Miami Nebraska title game when I was 4 yrs old, the first championship.

I did not attend UM and I've never even been to Miami. Vacationed several times in Florida and almost knocked out a cast member at Disney who was doing the gator chomp while I had a Miami hat on.

Born and raised in Wisconson. Became a huge Canes fan during the 1986 seasson (I was 12 at the time). I just loved the way they played with confidence & emotion. Plus Wisconsin was worse than garbage at the time.

No one questions if I went to UM but I always get asked about why do I like Miami. All I hear is that they are thugs, blah, blah, blah. It is going to be so sweet when/if they get back on top.

I hate this, but this is what I tell idiots who question my "right" to be a Miami fan. I was born in Baltimore, but moved to Miami when I was one in 1980. I lived in Miami until I went to college. My grandfather moved to Miami in 1946 after getting out of the army in WWII, and subsequently, my family, in one, shape or form, has had Miami football tickets since the 1950s. My mother used to be a professor at UM (now she's at FIU, though she's retiring this year). I went to my first Miami football game in 1984, and went to almost every home game from 1985-1996 (I went to away for college in '97). I moved back to Miami for a year in 2001 and went to every home game, before going to FSU for grad school. When I was at FSU, I still came down for 2-3 games a year. Since then, I've lived in Chicago, and now Chattanooga. I now have the season tickets for football, and though I only make 1-2 home games a year, I make sure the tickets are used by family or friends when I can't go. I also go to 1-2 away games since I live in the middle of ACC country (and, unfortunately, SEC country). I also grew up at the Light in the 80s, as well as the Knight Center, and went to every home game the year we went 0-18 in the Big East in basketball.

So, if any dumbass Gator or FSU fan wants to tell me I can't be a Miami fan because I didn't attend Miami, they can kiss my ***.

ps

I did go to UM Law for 2 days before I realized I didn't want to be a lawyer. I still have my UM ID to prove it

As someone who did go to UM, I love it when people root for the Canes even when they didn't go to the school. After all, they're my favorite team, so why wouldn't I want other people to root for them too? But when people say that Shalala should be fired based on the performance of the football team, if they didn't go the school, I immediately dismiss their opinion. The fact is, Shalala's number one job is to ensure the success of the university, not the football team. That being said, that's really the only area where I care if someone went to UM or not.

Why is it only with Miami fans? I mean, how many Notre Dame fans to do you know that actually went there? It seems like ND fans are all over the country, but how many of them actually went there? And are they also asked "Did you go to Notre Dame?"

Because 99.9% of the ****head behavior that our fan base exhibits, especially at both home and away games, are by non-alumni. It's also the morons who scream about Donna Shalala thinking her job is to make sure the football team wins games week in and week out.

And other things of that nature.

I tell them yes, I have two degrees from there and they proceed to just pull out the next tired insult.

Basically, I find that I am better off just trolling them when they ask me questions like that.

Never went to school at UM. I have family in Miami and would visit each year. My family would always have the Canes and Dolphins on. I think the first game I watched was Miami ND 1985 (I was 4 or 5). I still remember my cousin going crazy the entire game.

When I mention that I am a UM fan, I actually get looks and reactions from people (roll of the eyes, snickering, etc...). I haven't run into too many UM students that have a problem with my fandom, but I constantly run into locals here in NJ who find it inconceivable that I follow UM. I hate to say this too, but I think there is a bit of a racial component to it as well. I think the Canes of the 1980's left a lot of people shell shocked and angry with their bravado and because they were mainly inner city kids, it was difficult for some to take.

Personally, makes no difference whether you went to UM or not so long as you support the team in some regard (I support the team financially as I can, however, I have never been to a game unfortunately).

Good topic.

I went to FSU for undergrad and graduate school. Grew up a Cane fan going to the games every Saturday with my family and friends. Never for a second did my allegiance for the University of MIami change. In fact, I was even more prideful being a Cane fan going to FSU. I obviously got this question all the time and my response is that Miami is more like a professionally team in South Florida. It's a small university and a majority of it's support comes from South Florida natives. I grew up going to every game and it's what I remember most about my childhood. Usually in sports, the team you root for growing up sticks with you forever and is in grained in you.

All of my friends who went to FSU or UF still are die hard Cane fans and can't stand their respected schools. If someone is being obnoxious I argue that I'm a bigger fan then them because it's easy to be an FSU fan when you go to FSU. A true fan is someone who remains a Cane fan even when you go to a big football university where there is a ton of social and peer pressure.

I've had club level tickets since being out of school in '08 so I donate to them and that makes me feel apart of this University.

If someone wants to discredit my fan hood for choosing to go to a higher ranked academic school, so be it.

I'm a bigger fan then them because it's easy to be an FSU fan when you go to FSU. A true fan is someone who remains a Cane fan even when you go to a big football university.

I went to UF & feel the same way. I always repped the U, despite being friends with a lot of football players & always catching **** for it. (end of Coker era, we sucked)

I went to UM but I am happy to socialize and cheer on the Canes with all fans regardless of whether or not they attended. But I would hope that all fans help donate to our football facilities like I do to help our team now and in the future.

My People are from the Bahamas 185 mi away from Miami and my Dad was a huge Canes Fan so i naturally become on since birth but i graduated from USF. I say im a "USF Bull by degree but a Cane at heart" and people usually respect that answer

I was born in Coral Gables. Was a Miami fan from young age, although there was not much to be excited about. Still, I was in the OB for the gator flop. Later, I went to THE U for Law school but not undergrad. Remained Cane fan throughout. I have kids who went to Ufelon and even OSU, but were, are and remain Cane fans. So I am not sure what makes a Cane fan. I think you are a full fledged Cane fan when you smile and nod you head when you hear "THE U" on Sunday or "It's a Cane thing and you wouldn't understand." Oh, and you must hate the gator.

One more thing, you do not HAVE to believe that Donna has destroyed the football program to be a Cane fan. BUT she has and that is a simple fact. She sucks and must go and be replaced by someone not like her or Foote, who sucked too. Before the Donna supporters jump on me, please explain how the almost solitary and best piece of evidence the ncca had was a picture of her holding the check? The one piece of undeniable evidence was her greedy smile on film. Still, you can like her and defend her without losing your status as a Cane fan. I mean, it is not like she is a gator.

I did not attend UM, but support the school as they represent Miami, hometown team. Most accept that.

I didn't go to college at Miami, I've lived in New York my entire life. I've only been a Hurricanes fan for 6 seasons and I still remember the first time I watched a Miami game on TV was in 2007 vs Virginia for the final game at the Orange Bowl and losing 48-0. I didn't follow college football at the time but Ray Lewis was my favorite player and I did research on the history of Miami and I absolutely fell in love with the program. Since then I have always been a die hard Miami fan. I've spent way too much on apparel and accessories, and since last year I joined the Hurricane Club and have been donating when I can. I do plan on going to see a home game in the near future and I hope to become a season ticket holder one day. All through college I have had people question why am I a Miami fan but I just smile and throw up the U. ****, I became a fan DURING the Randy Shannon era. The 2013 season has been the most successful season I have witnessed as a fan. If it upsets someone that I didn't go to the school but still love and support the program, then they can kiss my *** and I'll continue to throw up the U. Go Canes!

Better than the 300 alumni mutes that go to games
