Difference between people hating one player on the team compared to a whole team
Ah yes, but his "hate" is viewed via the prism of a white, adopted Southerner (Forde born in Colorado, has spent most of his adult life in Louisville, KY). Did you see hate of Miami 20 years ago by the African American population? Urban latinos and whites who were non-traditional college football fans? No, there was admiration of a team that was beating the college football establishment and rubbing their noses in it (I believe this is the subject of Bruce Feldman's "Cane Mutiny"). Is Forde racist? I wouldn't go that far, but he is definitely biased in his believe that Miami was "hated" (horrible use of the word, BTW) by the nation at large. Did Miami revel in their "Bad Boy" image? Sure, but not any differently than the 1970s/early 80s NFL Raiders or 80s NBA Pistons.
Finally, Winston's issues are off the field and Miami made Forde hate them for what they did on the field (for the most part, camouflage and a few other "tweaks" excluded).
Maybe Forde wrote this to make his (sucking in the corner on his thumb) buddy Chucky Robinson feel better...
