WTF are "reputation" points on our profiles???

I shouldn't have commented in this thread. It's actually sensible around here, in the few times I've glimpsed left at other people's coloring. My remark was directed to a a trend I've seen on fan sites in general. For example, on a major Dolphins site I post on, the ones with highest reputation and annual awards are often the simplistic types who do nothing but express hatred toward the Jets as often as possible, and annually claim the Dolphins are due for an 11-5 season.

It is a system I wish I never enabled but has been used 849,358 times.

Why not? I don't really care about how many likes I get, but sometimes somebody posts something really cool, like DHucks thread about his son and I can't like it enough. And seeing how many likes that thread has right now kinda shows you how awesome Canes fans are.

The rep system is different than the likes system. I like the likes because when browsing a thread you can see which post are the good post to read. Likes do give positive rep points but they also have their own tally which could exist without the reputation system in place. The problem with reps is it basically just shows how long you have been on the site. Very few users are in the red so it doesn't do a good job at pointing out the crap.
