[h=2]Coaching career[/h] D'Onofrio's first coaching experience was as linebackers Coach at Saint Peter's College. The next year he became a defensive assistant with the Georgia Bulldogs. From there he was a linebackers coach with the Rutgers Scarlet Knights and tight ends, special teams, and inside linebackers coach with the Virginia Cavaliers. He joined the Temple Owls in 2006, and followed head coach Al Golden to the University of Miami as defensive coordinator for the Miami Hurricanes football team in December 2010. In 2012 his defense gave up more yards than any other defense in Miami history with a total of over 5,800 yards. In 2013, his defense gave up over 5,500 yards. He is widely considered the worst defensive coordinator in program history and learned to coach defense while playing EA Sports NCAA Football 2007 with his younger brother. Rather than coach on the sideline, he sits up high in the booth to better focus on his copy of "Defensive Coordinating for Dummies." He has said that this move (and book) led to the monumental improvement from the 5,800+ yards given up in 2012 to the mere 5,500+ yards given up in 2013. He is notably Al Golden's BFF, which has helped his career without a doubt.
