Yes, the Hurricanes lost three playmakers to the NFL. But there was so much uncertainty at quarterback in Miami last summer, there was a trickle-down effect onto the entire team. But with Brad Kaaya entrenched as the starting quarterback and several receivers returning, they could take a step forward.

Most specifically, it was difficult to build up a rhythm, chemistry and camaraderie between quarterbacks and receivers during offseason drills because nobody was quite clear on what was going on. Ryan Williams was hurt; Kevin Olsen had limited leadership skills; Jake Heaps was on his third team; Brad Kaaya and Malik Rosier were true freshmen.

Receiver Braxton Berrios, himself a freshman, recalled recently, “We were trying to be as normal as possible, but it was hard. Everyone’s head was on a swivel. We didn't know what was going on and neither did the coaches. Jake Heaps had college experience, but no other quarterback we were working with had any.

“It was a lot slower. The learning curve was huge. If a new receiver came in and didn't know the route, he couldn't always turn to a quarterback and say, ‘What do I have on this one? I forgot?’ Looking back on it now, I can't imagine that being this year.”

The difference between last summer and this one is stark. Kaaya emerged to win the starting quarterback job, earning ACC Rookie of the Year honors. He is firmly entrenched as the leader, taking ownership without the hesitation he showed a year ago.

“He’s confident in what he says now – he’s not looking around to see if people agree,” Berrios said. “He's more authoritative.”

Though Miami must find ways to replace Duke Johnson, Clive Walford and Phillip Dorsett, there is a deep group of receivers returning. They work out with Kaaya four times a week, working on their rhythm, route-running and timing.

But it’s not just the quarterbacks and receivers at player-led workouts. The Canes will do seven-on-seven and team drills, along with red-zone work and one-on-one work. Kaaya has seen the most improvement in the communication between everyone.

“The timing is a lot better, chemistry is a lot better, just the continuity in general has improved a lot,” Kaaya said. “It’s a lot easier to get guys on the same page. Our communication has improved a lot in general. I feel a lot of barriers have broken down. Guys come to me, from freshmen and up, guys are reiterating a call, guys are talking a lot more to me.

“As opposed to sitting in meetings and just watching the film, the guys are asking questions. If they don’t get it in the meeting room, they’re asking me about it, they’re asking coach about it, they’re asking each other about it. Guys aren’t keeping it to themselves and waiting until we get out there on the field. In that aspect, it’s become a lot better.”

Kaaya is confident in the returning personnel. Miami remains deep at receiver, with Berrios, Herb Waters, Stacy Coley, Malcolm Lewis and Rashawn Scott all returning.

Without giving away any secrets, Kaaya seemed excited about different personnel pairings this year that will allow Miami to diversify what it does on offense.

“We’re going to use all of our personnel as opposed to certain guys for certain situations,” Kaaya said. “Now we can do a lot of different personnel groupings and utilize guys’ strengths.

“They’ve all been working hard. The system we have set up, these guys compete every day. They get ranked every week, and guys get rewarded after the whole summer session. So guys are competing hard every day to be in that top 3 ranking in their position group. There’s a lot of competition going on and it’s only making them better.”

The hope is everyone will be better with a veteran firmly established at quarterback. Andrea Adelson, ESPN Staff Writer

I'm with you on that 2nd quote. Does this mean more of that rotational BS that these coaches love to use so much? Find your best players and play them the majority of the game. I'm so tired of linemen and cornerbacks swapping out series. I'm so excited about the players we have now Kaaya, Yearby, Coley, AQM, Thomas, etc.), but I can't stand this rotational nonsense. Do I really need to see D'Mauri Jones dropping passes? Keep those guys off the field.

theoretically it means that teams wont know what we're running based on who's in and what formation, as has been the case the last 3 years, I'm not holding my breath

This is not a bad WR core at all to has a Sophomore QB
Kaaya is confident in the returning personnel. Miami remains deep at receiver, with Berrios, Herb Waters, Stacy Coley, Malcolm Lewis and Rashawn Scott all returning.

Yeah that is quite an accomplished list. As a unit those 5 put up almost 1000 yards and 5 TDs last year. impressive...

Not to mention everyone of them has been a reliable target during their UM careers...

Rashawn Scott is as experienced as an NFL vet at his age.

Oh My God .... You need to stop
- We lost one of the Top RBs to the Draft
- The fastest WR in the draft
- One of the Best OL
- and I think the best pass Catching TE's in the Nation

But we might be better this year ...... Hate to tell you that group of WR's are JAG

Besides - we had all of this NFL talent and we didn't do anything with it
- I will cheer for the Canes however we will be one game over .500 or one game under .500 - AND Al needs to go and early so we can save the recruiting class

Al golden will get the most out of this group. this is the year I'm feeling 10-2 or 11-1 and you can't really rule out 12-0 since the schedule is weak

Yes, as we can all see it's the "slurpers" that throw players under the bus...as this anti-Golden Rhodes scholar claims that all of our WRs are "jags" just because they don't have a ton of yards in their career. Of course, he ignores the fact that throughout the nation, players lower on the depth chart don't get a lot of yards, but then when they start, many become as good as the "stars" they replaced. But I'm sure that can't happen here, because ncncanes has labeled them "jags", and he knows all.

Herb aint no JAG, he should have played a lot more last year, stacy aint one either unless he plays the same as last year then ill label him that

What teams weak ?

Minus clemson and FSU they are weak and even those two have some question marks

Only problem is that now WE are the weak team on all their schedules. Al has proven that he can be out coached and beaten by anyone with a little bit of talent on the field.

I haven't seen us properly utilize the talent we've had in the recent past, I don't see how that's gonna change. Hopefully I'm wrong.

We have done so well under Al against NEB, VT, and UVA I am sure all of them are just counting our game as a loss. Al can lose to anyone except Bethune and maybe FAU.
