Why are we paying USF to play us?

Can someone in the know explain why we're paying USF to play? They're ranked. They have a larger alumni base than we do. They're in a large metropolitan area with a big fan base. And unlike us, they're building an on-campus stadium! They have more money than several P-4 schools. Why are they even getting a dime from us? I get that we signed a contract (Blake James' dumb idea, probably), but things have shifted so much that it doesn't even make sense anymore.

It makes sense for us to pay an underfunded HBCU like Bethune or FAMU to come play us as a tune-up. They actually need the money. USF does not.

"The three-game contract both schools signed in 2019 calls for another game Sept. 4, 2027 in Tampa and the finale on Sept. 9, 2028 back at Hard Rock Stadium. After the final game in 2028, UM owes USF $1.15 million to be paid no later than Feb. 15, 2029."

"That payout averages to about $383,000 per game. For comparison, Florida State paid FCS team East Texas A&M $450,000 to come to Tallahassee last week."

Fair to question it but, considering how the last 2 games have gone, as an irresponsible fan I gotta say money well spent.

They might be open to contract recission

I'll be honest I don't really care because it's not my money. But also, I'd rather have watched that game which was ultimately a nice little resume builder, than to have seen us drub Ball State 53-3. Appreciate it Blakey boy

Fair enough. It still drives me up a wall to see us as a private school literally subsidizing a big state school that has more built-in resources than we do.

That's also valid, but to your point from earlier keep in mind that this year & last while we've had USF on the schedule we've also done the 'schedule an HBCU' for mutual benefits deal (FAMU 2024 / Bethune 2025) -- no need to double dip in that well for a single season cause we might **** around and win the SWAC before we do the ACC.

Ultimately I think it's just the realities of CFB scheduling, there's so many factors to consider but ultimately it boils down to your budget & potential dance partners

I mean the contract was signed in 2019 so that takes care of the questions surrounding who’s ranked what in 2024, 2025 and 2028. Like already pointed out I thought I was standard that P5 pay for their out of conference opponents unless it’s a home and home trade off. No matter who. If there’s no even trade in home field then what would be the incentive to take the game and get potentially embarrassed on national tv?

The Canes get an extra home game and as far as resources go, Miami gets about $35M each year from the ACC and USF gets about $8M a year from the AAC.

Normally I would agree with you, but the Canes are the big dog in this situation.

For these types of discussions, you have to throw out all of those economics and answer it from a football perspective. P4 teams in the playoff discussion need quality non-conference opponents for which they are one. Pay-up.

They’re also a better named program that wins here and there so playing them and the cost savings of such a short trip across state make sense. I don’t love it but I get it.
