Who's RB2 now? InsideTheU's David Lake breaks down who's likely to fill in

With running back CharMar Brown out for the season, we asked 247Sports' David Lake who takes over at RB2 during his weekly appearance on CanesInSight.

Here's what DMoney and Lake had to say on the topic:

DMoney: Let me ask you about running back, David, because Marty going down, I'm heartbroken about it.

I talked to someone yesterday and asked if this changes his career. What I'm hearing is he'll be back running the ball and being Marty, which was reassuring. With injuries you never know, but he's a hard worker, and that tends to help the process.

Football-wise, it's still a heartbreaking situation. So you've got Jordan Lyle, Javian Mallory and Girard Pringle Jr. How do you see this shaking out?

David Lake: I'm interested to see it, because the Central Michigan game is what it's going to be. The things to watch are the O-line rotation and who makes the first statement that says "I'm going to be RB2." And I try not to be the guy who's enamored with freshmen, right?

DMoney: I'm that guy. You're more sober on that.

David Lake: But there's something about Javian Mallory that is just different.

He's a similar style to Brown in how you can use him. Brown was good in pass protection, he was very good on the check-down swing balls into the flat on third down where he'd get a full head of steam and go get you the first down. He was also a fourth-quarter hammer, and he shared that role with Mark Fletcher Jr.

Mallory can do those things. And I think Mallory has better vision and better natural running instincts than Brown. But he's a freshman, is he going to get that opportunity right away?

I think they really want to see Jordan Lyle maximize his potential and the trajectory he was on during the first half of fall camp. He looked unreal. My guess is it'll be one of those two, and Pringle will be your classic change-of-pace back, which I think is a good role for him.

If I'm picking over the course of the season, I'd probably ride with Mallory. I think he's special, and I didn't see that coming when he signed with Miami.

DMoney: He can catch, too. That's what I keep thinking about for passing downs, he's got good hands. I saw him at a camp where he and Derrek Cooper were matched up basically the whole time. Cooper's speed was ridiculous, he's a big guy and he's a competitor - just scored a touchdown for Texas.

But I thought Mallory was the smoother player with the better hands. As much as I want to pigeonhole him as our grind-it-out runner, it's not like he can't catch.

David Lake: He's much more of an explosive threat than I thought, too.

I still think he could benefit from changing his body in a college strength and conditioning program, so some of that explosiveness is still to come. When he gets to the second level, he's kind of gone, always runs just fast enough to break the angles of whoever's chasing him.

DMoney: Chris Wheatley-Humphrey moves up the depth chart now. He was hurt for FAMU, which was going to be a showcase game for guys in his spot.

People always ask me about him, and he reminds me of Henry Parrish. He's in a very deep, talented room, where he was so far down the chart that we didn't talk about him much. Now we've entered a range where you could see him play a role this year if things go a certain way.

David Lake: It's a physical position, so I hope the guys ahead of him stay healthy. No more injuries, please.

I can't remember another year that's been this brutal with early-season injuries. But Hellcat can play. If he gets his opportunity, it's up to him to produce. For any young player, when you get your chance, go out and produce, and then you get more opportunities. It's very cut and dry.

DMoney: We labeled this Insider Talk, and you talk to coaches and people around the program. The one thing I've learned over the years is that a player can look good in practice one day and it's "this guy's going to be our guy." Two weeks later, he can't play. It goes the other way, too: one week a guy won't be in the program by the end of the year, and three weeks later you're building around him.

So even people talking directly to the people involved aren't getting the full picture. It's week to week. That goes for SJ Alofaituli, Max Buchanan, everybody, at every position.

We covered a lot more than the backfield on this one, including the offensive line rotation, the secondary, WR3 and a deep dive on old recruiting classes that got nerdy in the best way.

Tell us in the comments who's getting your RB2 carries.

The thing that yall didn’t mention here is Mallory’s blocking. From what I’ve read he’s pretty good with it and in Mario’s offense this is a must have, and Mario mentioned him specifically at a presser. Right now I think everyone gets some PT, and as yall said now’s the chance step up and show out. The Holy Grail of PT is out for the taking, let’s see who exceeds their grasp and gets the spot.🙌🏽

CIS has always been more of an aggregate of the sites than direct competitor.. Think the collaboration is good and beneficial for all parties involved.
Makes sense. I just have it out with 247 and all those writers.

Last week we spam WR screens to 0 yards, today Dminwy wants us spamming WR screens to Upshaw, Wingo, and Barkate, and not to our best WR.

If he means JUST this game I get not to Toney. If it’s in general….drugs…

This will be decided by production. Pringle was RB1B by the Pitt game last year because he was ballin. They will all get reps and it's up for grabs.

The case for Lyle is - his On3 #1 RB recruiting ranking, how he allegedly looks in practice, and these 3 runs:

91 yd vs USF - 4th Quarter up 28 with 3 min left
61 yd vs Wake - 4th Quarter up 21 with 3 min left
17 yd vs Stanford - 4th Quarter up 21 with 9 min left

33% of his career yds are on those 3 runs. He has 86 other carries

Jordan Lyle has gotten 2 or more carries against P4 opponents twelve times. He has had a YPC of 4 or higher twice: against Stanford and Wake.

Meanwhile, this is how the mood was 10-11 months ago:
Some people are overestimating how many carries Pringle should get, even as RB1.

He’s a smaller back who has already dealt with injuries. We don’t want him in street clothes like Isaac Brown and Desmond Reid.

We need to pair him with a power back. Fletcher is returning at the perfect time.

Guess he’s going to seize it again………..”Cut and dry.”

Last year, you and others wanted to pay a million dollars for a kid who finished as Oregon’s sixth-string RB. It was a bad plan.

The team’s plan was to see if any of our Top 10 high school backs emerged. It turned out to be Pringle instead of Lyle, who underperformed our expectations. As a result, we struggled running early and are running better now that Pringle has seized that spot.

Do you want to replace Pringle? Fletcher will play the same winning role he’s played every year. It’s more about Pringle, since he’s the guy we’re all projecting as our top runner. There is only one ball.

I think the staff will consider any great player in the Portal. It’s a case-by-case deal. But I still don’t think spending a ton of money on a Portal back before QB or DL makes much sense. And we have bigger needs at TE and LB.

Money is not infinite and we have to think like a pro team.

Thank goodness he didn’t leave in the portal but it’s **** near blasphemous how the program’s apparatus and the program itself has brushed aside what he did last season; and are falling back in love with the shiny toy who, has up to this point, only shown out against non-p4 teams.

Obviously Fletcher is RB1, and Marty is hurt. What’s baffling is how quickly this dude #0 has been discarded. I think it’s partially because his main advocate is now coaching the Cardinals’ RBs.

This was the best performance of the season. But for the rest of the year, we're on a tightrope with no net. So while vibes are high right now, there's still a ton of work ahead. Here are some thoughts on the weekend before moving onto Blacksburg.

- Girard Pringle is exactly what this running game needed. He's really fast (10.56 100M), but he also runs with a decisive one-cut style that keeps the offense on schedule. He was a workhorse at Armwood with 30+ carry games, so he's capable of playing bigger than his size. While the opposing defenses will get tougher than Syracuse and NC State, Pringle is RB1 until proven otherwise.

One area I'd like to see him continue to expand is his receiving (32 yards on Saturday). He's not going to be a reliable pass protector at this stage of his career (see sack on first drive), but his ability to get out and make big plays as a receiver helps mitigate against that. I hope at one point we get to see our backfield at full strength with Mark Fletcher back. They can be Thunder and Lightning while also playing at the same time. I know Jordan Lyle is disappointed, as Pringle's role was supposed to be his, but this program is built on competition and Pringle has maximized his opportunities.

@ what point does it turn to self-sabotaging favoritism? Somehow Pringle had been relegated to RB5 despite what he did last year; and Lyle jumped over him in the offseason. Lyle got suspended. Came back. And now is boxing him out again?

Pringle was the leading rusher in the last 4 games in 2025 and started 3 of them. Here are stats from the Pitt game 2025 when Fletcher started:

Fletcher 10-38
Pringle 10-82

My guy hasn't done this yet but he's the only proven RB on the team now other than Fletcher. He needs to step up and we paid him to step up. We can't win #6 with just Fletcher.

Fix the oline issues or whoever is running the ball Mallory, hellcat, Edge, Portis, or Duke wouldn’t be able to get much

Loved the episode, especially the detailed breakdown of the 2023 recruiting class. Do the 2024 class next time...
