Good article in Sun Sent today...

Mark Richt working to keep newly ranked 'Canes grounded - Sun Sentinel

"...and when you start thinking you're pretty good is when you get whooped..."
- Head Coach Mark Richt

That attitude is how leaders keep high performing teams from falling off the pace, from stopping to set the pace for others to follow.

Win every snap of every play. Take no opponent for granted. Get all players the right reps at the right time.

Crush and Dominate.

Go Canes.

ive also heard that confidence aids in continued success

maybe, its just that sometimes you lose football games regardless of how good you think you are.

Nick Saban did the same thing after trouncing USC. With college kids it's easy to think you are invincible after a blowout win

The article is mainly about the true freshman.
I also took from it that he doesn't want the team to think they have arrived...much tougher road still ahead.

That was a bold article from Christy.. but she is the 3rd best looking cane reporter we have behind the BEAST and PETEY

Good god, I hope they understand that the first game doesn't mean **** moving forward. Didn't realize that would need to be explained.

"When we were out there warming up by ourselves, getting a feel for the field, I kneeled down and felt the grass with my hands and things. That's when I really got to sit there and think about where I am, where I came from and everything like that," Quarterman said immediately after Saturday's win. "Once we ran through the smoke, I was totally focused and locked in on the task at hand."

Gonna be a tough year if Rick has to bust out the "we can't think we're too good" schtick after beating FAMU.

Miami gets the #25 ranking in the AP poll after beating FAMU and the media is asking if Richt can keep the players grounded? ******ry at its best.

I think it speaks to differences in leadership style between previous and current staff.

Could the previous staff give a quote, ever, without using "trust the process" or "its a process"? That works with engineers, not so much with the 18 yr old D1P5 football player demographic.

This staff is communicating in ways that might better relate. "Hunt in packs", "If you can't do this, you can't play LB at this level", "When you think you are good enough, you are going to get beat".

Certainly leaders must bring their own personality, but if you look thematically across any competitive landscape...military, business, sports, etc. it seems the most consistent success are from those organizations whose leadership look as concerned after a W as they do after an L.

Johnson, Bellichek, Saban, Parcells, Cowher, et al come to mind.

Congratulate them on a play well executed, but remind them there is no extra credit because you did so. That last tackle or last catch has no bearing on the next missed tackle or dropped pass.

I have no problem with Coach Richt saying that and definitely don't think it's an indication of how our season will play out. We have a lot of young players playing and even some of the older ones haven't really experienced much success since they've been here. This is probably the first time they've been told how great they are and been getting patted on the back all week, in a long time. It's important to keep them grounded, no matter who the opponent is. We need to have an us against the world mentality. We surely haven't arrived because we cracked the polls at 25, which I think is the overall message here.

Between Jaquan, Shaq, Kaaya, and Walton, I'm not really concerned about complacency.

Them dudes are leaders with laser like focus. They even have Stacy Coley on that wave. We ain't talking about Kirby or a freshman Kaaya or sophomore Stacy. I'm pretty confident that we will show up to work every day.

Plus, we have Mark Richt now. Which is the most important departure from recent editions of the team.

I would rather hear about a coach keeping players grounded than hearing the phrases "We are going to control what we can control and we are not going to listen to any outside noise".

he's right, they've accomplished NOTHING. as far as i'm concerned miami should be ranked for the duration of Richt's tenure and beyond.
