What's the intel on Derrick Smith?

Solid player... I can see him playing SAM next year... didn't realize his size until I talked with him at the awards banquet.. he is just a bit smaller than McCloud with the same build

Between him and Amari Carter who do you think has the most upside at safety and linebacker?

You have seen them up close to know better than me, but I've always thought they both could be great linebackers but Carter would be my preferred choice to switch bc Smith looks more fluid in space. Or am I wrong in that assesment?

Remember back in 2000, special teams were fierce largely because of younger DBs and KLBs. Carl Walker, Marshall, McGlover, Weaver. All exceptional STs players.

Watch the 2001 Washington game. Guys like KW2 blocking punts and ****. Was crazy how much depth we had.

Neither is playing LB. Smith was playing nickel last year. How many guys have you seen go from playing nickel to LB?

One of my favorite players on the 2000-2001 teams was Markese Fitzgerald.

Dude routinely knocked the **** out of people.

Loved that dude! He wasn't overly big or fast, but he had enough tools and he was just tough as ****! Remember the INT against the Gaytors that went back for almost 100 yards?

He's an OLB in my opinion. The kid is a football player that likes contact, has decent speed, tackles well, and great instincts. You'll notice his hips are very stiff in coverage though. Him playing Nickel and SS against running teams like Gtech makes a lot of sense, too.

Different dude. You’re thinking of Maurice Sikes....

Good intel

Fitzgerals was in same class as Reed, Morgan, Wayne, Moss, etc. He was a senior on 2001 team.

He was hesitant getting off blocks and attacking in space this year when he played a lot. In obvious passing situations he excelled in coverage but definitely got caught with his eyes in the backfield on a few play action passes this year when he was at nickel. Keep him there if the game slows down for him over the off season or put him back there at the free spot playing the center in our cover three.

We don't have depth at nickel bc Diaz operates out of a bs base defense mostly. It also shows how athletic Smith is for the team to play him at nickel at all. He's big as ****..he would be a perfect fit as an OLB but I would rather move Carter to OLB (only if necessary) and see how Smith continues to develop as a safety.
