I don't think our LB coach has been announced yet. A lot of people assume it will be Diaz, but I don't think that's set in stone yet. Also we need a safeties coach, because Rumph was only hired for corners.
 
"There can be nine (9) assistant coaches on a staff who coach on the field and recruit. There can be two (2) graduate assistants on staff. There can be infinite non-coaching staff members, but those individuals cannot give instruction (think director of football operations, quality control, and the like). Many call the last part about non-coaching staff members the "Alabama rule", cuz they have about a million non-coaching staff members.

With that in mind, here's the list of assistants at current:

Co-OC/RBs - Thomas BrownOL - Stacy Searels (reported, but not announced)DC - Manny DiazDL - Craig KuligowskiCBs - Mike Rumph (as per above report)Special Teams - Todd Hartley

Here are the available coaching spots:

Now,*Jon Richt, Mark's son, is on staff as an unspecified offensive assistant. If he's quality control or another non-coaching type of position, then that leaves 3 *open assistant spots.


If you look at the list, there are 5 open positions. Let's play out the hypotheticals:

If the elder Richt takes QB coach (he's said he wants to be more involved with this position) and/or Diaz takes LBs (a position he's coached multiple times in the past), then that could mean Miami brings in as many as 3 additional assistants to fill out the staff.


If you assume that Larry Scott will be retained as TE coach, then you're looking at Miami being able to bring in 2 additional assistants for a full staff of 9. Hartley coaching STs only is weird, and he's worked with DBs before, so maybe he takes Safeties, and his position is S/ST now. Makes sense, and could easily work.


No, those hypotheticals aren't set in stone or imminent to be announced, but that could very well be how things end up falling, in my opinion.


The last 3 spots on the staff will obviously make a big impact, but they're not make-or-break type hires. Miami could go in a number of directions with the remaining spots, and it will be interesting to see who they get to fill out the staff."
 
I would hope he gets another defensive coach. A staff of Diaz, Kool, Rumph, Hartley would be a little light on numbers/experience.

That said there are only 2 spots left. One will go to a WRs coach. I guess the other is either TEs, LBs, or S.
 
We still need a WR and TE coach since Scott being retained hasn't been made official yet (unless I missed it). One of those two will likely be a co-OC along with Thomas Brown.

With Rumph being hired as a CB coach, I'd like to see us go after a proven DB coach to complement him. That'd be a far better option, IMO, than having a Rumph/Hartley tandem be assigned to such an important position group in Diaz' defense.

Seems like the only way that'll happen is if Mark Richt wants to coach the QBs himself and Diaz handles LB responsibilities.
 
As of now, we've got 7 assistants hired (I'm assuming we wouldn't put out a press release for Young Richt unless he was going to take some sort of official role).

OL: Stacy Searles
WR: ??? (Beard still an option, Co-OC title an option here but if Beard's hired then I'm guessing TE would get Co-OC)
TE: ??? (Co-OC title an option here, maybe take another run at Lilly with that title)
QB: Jon Richt (Elder Richt extremely hands on here)

DL: Coach Kool
LB: Manny Diaz (Has coached LBs almost everywhere else)

I think defense is done and the last two slots go for WR and TE. Unless, Young Richt is strictly a GA type of coach in which maybe we hire a LB coach. I just don't see Hartley taking up a coaching slot just to coach ST.
 
Hoping Richts son is a GA.
Ideally Lilly would come as TE/OC, but doubtful that happens.
Wouldnt be craziest thing to see Cristobal come as te/oc after the chamlionship game.

Hartley may also be recruiting coordinator.

Seems plausible but I hope we add one more on D. Only 4 defensive coaches and 2 with real experience isn't what I was hoping for. Especially since Richt's expertise is on the offensive side of the ball.

Richt had ILB and OLB coaches at UGA.

It's a little more common these days. Saban's got a guy only coaching OLB, with Kirby Smart doing LBs. Urban Meyer has a S coach and CB coach (CB coach is also ST coach, which is what I predict happens here with Hartley).
