What if we “promote Richt”

Mark Richt is the best coach Georgia has ever had. He took us from the terrible Goff/ Donnan era and made us into a 9 to 10 program. We were very close to winning it all (see 2012). Richt won us 2 SEC Championship and several east titles. Richt isn’t perfect, but he is defintely top 8 coach currently. He can be stobburn as seen with the QB situation and offensive play calling, but if I were a Miami fan I would be patient with him. Georgia is a tier 3 program and no where near the level of a blue chip program like Alabama, Michigan, Miami, Ohio State, etc. Georgia also isn’t a national brand (in both football and academics) like Miami and cannot get the same level of recruits. Miami is significantly ahead of Georgia regarding everything. South Florida has some of the best recruits in the country. If Richt can make Georgia a 9-10 win program, Richt can certainly make Miami into a consistent play off contender due to more resources. Miami fanbase must give Richt more time, so Miami can get his guys in and the dividend will pay off.

There are many fans right now, who are regretting the decision to let him go... especially after Georgia’s terrible blowout to LSU yesterday.
Get this dawg troll outta here.

Because of the absolutely terrible and inexcusable decision to give him an extension, this is our best (only?) option:

1. Richt “resigns” citing whatever BS reasons he wants to save face. In actuality Miami is firing him and agrees to allow him to resign in exchange for a bigger percentage of his remaining salary (75%) vs the zero percent he would be owed for voluntarily resigning.

This is a “win-win” as it allows Richt to save face and protect whatever pride he has left while Miami saves at least some of what is owed to him.

2. No shot Miami is willing or able to pay for a top hire or ascending talent if they are paying Richt to go away. For anyone who disagrees, look at what LSU is paying Orgeron.

With that, elevate Diaz to HC. The defense has shown flaws but we should all agree on a few things:

1. Defense has shown improvement each year.
2. Diaz has shown a willingness/ability to adapt his scheme (addition of striker position, for the most part has been successful with halftime adjustments)
3. He preaches a Miami style of defense. Agressive. Violent. I believe he deserves credit for keeping his guys together in spite of the offensive ineptitude this year. Outside of the poor response in the LSU game, our defense has battled and kept us in games that our offense has done everything they could to give away.

Now...is Diaz the perfect hire? The right hire? No and no...but under the circumstances, is he the best option for us? I would argue yes. Most would say a football team takes on the personality of their coach. Outside of the LSU game, our defense has fought and battled. Shown spirit. Diaz is an emotional leader and I believe the defense reflects that. He comes across as a student of the game. While I feel he is perhaps a bit too reliant on our base defense, his track record of halftime adjustments shows he is able and willing to make changes.

3. By elevating Diaz to HC with a modest raise ($1MM?), their should be enough to go out and hire a strong OC with a competent staff. We all love Dugans and Hartley and I would love to see them retained. But if the trade is getting a new OC and saying bye to those two? I wish them well.

If this works? UM is able to generate more than enough to offset Richt’s buyout expense, eventually pay Diaz as a top 20 HC and pay enough to retain a competent P5 coaching staff.

If Diaz craps out? That means he probably makes it into year 3 or 4 and we are back to the drawing board again. But I would absolutely 100% sign up for that than another year of Richt. There is zero chance Richt makes the right decisions, modernizes our offense, or overcomes the damage that has been done by way of our recruiting. The jig is up and everyone knows he is inept as an offensive coach. Keeping him around puts us back 2-3 years for each additional season he stays.
