What if: Miami Hurricanes in the SEC...

Honestly, it could actually be a boon to the program. I recall Texas A&M being an absolute dumpster fire for a decade, and then joining the SEC. Based on how they were playing in the Big 12, I thought that they easily would be a 3 to 4 win program once in the SEC. Instead they have actually been quite competitive, and competitive from the first year forward.

BECAUSE THE CONFERENCE IS...................OVERRATED. LOL
TEX A&M CAME IN ABLE TO THROW A 5YD PASS AND INSTANTLY WAS COMPETITIVE IN THE SEC. There wasnt some magic sec potion that they put on to make them competitive in the sec by joining the conference

Yes, they also have been throwing a lot of money to the program which means more bags and more top rated players espeically at the QB position. Lastly, they have an offense that exposes the other SEC teams and makes them a tough matchup.

I don't know, by now I think we have legitimate rivalries with UVA, UNC, and GT. Judging from the way they get up to play us, their teams and fans certainly think so, even if our fans may not.

I don’t consider those teams rivals, and I’m sure most Miami fans agree.

Fair statement....but we can apply that concept to any school in any conference. UF fans consider UGA, Tenn rivals in football. Do they consider Kent, Mizz or USCe rivals in football? Do they consider LSU a rival, they play them every year as the rivalry-crossover game?

What turns something into a rivalry?

- Long extended periods of playing each other.... Simple fact is we don't have 30-40 year histories of playing the same teams to establish rivalries. VT and FSU we have that history with. UF and ND ended 30 years ago with sporadic meetings since. Syracuse & BC would have been a maybes if they moved with us at the same time and joined our division. Pitt was just never a relevant team.
- Geographic reasons....Only FSU and UF fit that bill.
- Repeated meetings with some real stakes.....FSU, VT meet that. ND, Oklahoma, Nebraska in the 80's, 90's.

If we joined the SEC east 15 years ago, had the same 15 years of mediocrity.......Can we say any team besides UF would be considered a Rivalry? Who in that conference would consider us a Rival? Each team besides UF would list at least 3,4,5 other teams they would consider more of a rival than us.

I look at that Frankenstein B10 division with Nebraska and Maryland what rivalries do the have? They both abandoned all their traditional rivalries for a few more $.......Maybe the concept of rivalries doesn't matter in today's football.

Teams in the SEC benefit from many advantages. One big one is they get to play by their own set of rules. Combine that significant advantage with the fact that we're sitting right in the middle of the most fertile recruiting areas in the country and the implications are obvious. While it would take a couple years of extremely strong recruiting, Miami would be back to elite status in a very short period of time. If we dominated recruiting in the "State of Miami", we could compete and beat anyone.

Other advantages:

  • Our revenues would be maximized due to the SEC Network and TV rights deals (plus virtually all SEC games would be sold out)
  • Attendance would increase
  • Our strength of schedule would be extremely strong
  • It would enhance recruiting
  • We could play UF annually (as well as FSU)
  • Better bowl games
  • Monster games against top SEC teams

Certain Disadvantages:

  • The SEC is not as prestigious academically
  • The ACC is much better for basketball

It is very unlikely to happen but it is an interesting question.
