As always, only games vs FBS teams are factored in these numbers.
Against UVA, the offense had its worst total offense output of the year, and its 2nd worst YPP output. But the defense was better, especially in the redzone after the 6-for-6 debacle against VT. Let's see how the numbers shake out at the halfway point of the season.
Offense:
Yards per play: 59th (5.81 YPP)
Points per game: 93rd (22.8 PPG)
Passing yards per game: 23rd (284.8 YPG)
Passing completion percentage: 24th (65.1%)
Passing yards per attempt: 31st (8.1 YPA)
Passer rating: 39th (145.89)
Rushing yards per game: 119th (98.8 YPG)
Rushing yards per attempt: 112th (3.19 YPA) -- Factors in sacks
Sacks given up per game: 130th (5.6 per game) -- Improved from last week, but still dead last in the country
3rd down conversion %: 127th (25.42%)
4th down conversion %: 80th (44.4% -- 4 for 9)
TFLs allowed per game: 129th (10.2 per game) -- Only FAU is worse at 10.4 per game
Red Zone TD %: 93rd (52.6% TD rate, 10 TDs in 19 chances)
Red Zone Scoring %: 103rd (14 scores in 19 chances)
Field goal %: 102nd (6 out of 10)
PAT %: 114th (19 out of 21)
Defense:
Yards per play allowed: 23rd (4.85 YPP)
Points per game allowed: 39th (23.0 PPG)
Passing yards per game allowed: 74th (238.2 YPG)
Passing completion percentage allowed: 23rd (55.5%)
Passing yards per attempt: 63rd (7.3 YPA)
Passer rating allowed: 50th (126.91)
Rushing yards per game allowed: 6th (81.0 YPG)
Rushing yards per attempt allowed: 5th (2.45 YPA)
Sacks per game: 18th (3.2 sacks per game)
3rd down % allowed: 69th (38.9% allowed)
4th down % allowed: 126th (87.5% allowed) -- FINALLY STOPPED A 4th DOWN!
TFLs per game: 26th (7.4 per game)
Red Zone td % allowed: 59th (73.3% allowed -- 11 TDs in 18 chances) -- Jumped up from 111th last week after the performance vs UVA (0 TDs in 3 trips)
Red Zone Scoring % allowed: 122nd (93.3% allowed -- 17 scores in 18 chances)
Punting: 28th (44.39 Yard average) -- Lou Hedley, I love you
Team Stats:
Penalties: 125th (9 penalties per game) -- Only 4 penalties on Friday night, much improved
Penalty yards: 114th (72.5 Yards per game)
Turnover margin: 47th (0.2 per game -- 8 takeaways, 7 giveaways)
Time of possession: 36th (31:09 per game)
Number of offensive plays: 98th (330 plays)
Advanced metrics:
Overall SP+: 30th
Offensive SP+: 50th
Defensive SP+: 24st
Special Teams SP+: 101st
Sagarin Ranking: 44th
Massey Rankings: 57th
Takeaways:
As expected, the offensive numbers sunk lower while the defensive rankings got better, in most categories. This continues to be a bad offense, decreasing to 59th now in yards per play (Richt finished 84th last year) and 93rd in points per game. Of course, sacks and TFLs allowed continue to bog down this offense. The performance on offense vs UVA was simply not good, and was plain unwatchable at times (basically the entire 2nd and 3rd quarters). The passing numbers continue to rank pretty well nationally, while the running game has been abysmal outside of a few big Deejay runs. The defense continues to inch back to respectability, especially against the run. Simply put, you cannot run your backs against this defense. QB designed runs and scrambles have worked at times, but running backs have had little to no success all year. Miami has not given up more than 3.5 YPC to anyone this season.
Also, things usually balance out throughout the course of a season. Against VT, Miami gave up 6 redzone TDs in 6 chances. Clearly, this is anomaly. So what happens the next week? 0 TDs in 3 trips, and UVA had a couple other trips inside the 30 that resulted in 0 points. Miami bent at times, but never broke.
I believe the defense can continue to improve in the 2nd half. Silvera back, Rousseau finally playing more, Bolden ingrained in the defense, the CBs seemingly gaining more confidence, and the overall performance of the defensive line in the run game should instill some positivity. Should be a chance to pad the stats this week.....GT is a very bad football team, and Miami is playing yet again at home as a 20 point favorite. I'd like to see somewhere close to 40 points and 500 yards on offense, and another smothering performance by the defense.
A couple other positives from Friday....penalties were much improved. Truthfully, those blind dumbasses didn't call much of anything on either team, but after the laundry fest we've seen almost weekly, I'll take it. 0 missed kicks.....HUGE win. And Lou Hedley, you have been an absolute godsend. The ball isn't gorgeous off his foot, but what a breath of fresh air after the comedy show that was the punting game last year. HUGE improvement.
